BTS Time Capsule Goes on Display at Gwanghwamun as Seoul Prepares for Comeback Concert

Seoul's National Museum of Korean Contemporary History has moved BTS's sealed time capsule - locked until 2039 - to a new exhibition space timed to the group's first full reunion concert since completing mandatory military service.

With ARMY descending on Seoul from around the world ahead of BTS's March 21 comeback performance at Gwanghwamun Square, the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History (NMKCH) is capitalizing on the moment. Starting March 16 and running through May 31, the museum's third-floor multipurpose hall hosts a new exhibition titled "From Youth to Youth: Messages and Gifts from BTS."

The centerpiece is the purple time capsule BTS handed to then-President Moon Jae-in on September 19, 2020, at South Korea's inaugural Youth Day ceremony held at Cheong Wa Dae. The group delivered the capsule as representatives of Korean youth, with leader RM describing its contents as "our musical achievements, memories, love and gratitude toward our fans, and a special message for the young adults who are recipients of this box." The capsule - a purple paper box roughly 40 centimeters long, 30 centimeters wide, and 26 centimeters deep, stamped with a white BTS logo - holds items symbolizing the group's music, their fans, and young people broadly. Moon subsequently donated it to the NMKCH, where it has been on permanent display on the fifth floor ever since.

For the new exhibition, the museum relocated the capsule to the third-floor hall and added footage of BTS's Youth Day speech alongside other archival broadcast material. A museum spokesperson told local outlet TenAsia that the move was designed to draw more Korean and international visitors coinciding with comeback-related events spread across Seoul. The museum invested roughly 20 million won in the reconfigured space, covering new display walls, graphic design, and updated lighting.

The capsule is scheduled to be unsealed at the 20th Youth Day ceremony in 2039 - a 19-year wait chosen deliberately. Under South Korea's Framework Act on Youth, 19 is the legal starting age of youth, so the group and organizers set the timeline accordingly.

The exhibition opens just days before BTS drops ARIRANG, their fifth studio album, on March 20. The following evening, all seven members - RM, Jin, SUGA, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook - take the stage together for the first time in more than three years for BTS THE COMEBACK LIVE | ARIRANG at Gwanghwamun Square. The free outdoor concert streams globally on Netflix, directed by Hamish Hamilton, whose credits include multiple Super Bowl halftime shows and the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony. Authorities estimate up to 260,000 people could gather at the square and surrounding streets on the night.

It's a fitting backdrop. Gwanghwamun Square, flanked by the historic Gyeongbokgung Palace and long a gathering place for Korean civic life, becomes something else this week: a pilgrimage site for a global fandom celebrating the return of the group that put Korean pop on the world's radar. After completing their mandatory military service - with SUGA, the last to serve, discharged in June 2025 - BTS's comeback represents exactly the kind of story the time capsule was meant to speak to: young people who keep going, who return.

The museum exhibition is free and open to the public through May 31.
