BTS performs their first group concert in nearly four years at Gwanghwamun Square on March 21, 2026, with Netflix broadcasting the event to over 190 countries worldwide.

The seven-member group reunites for "BTS THE COMEBACK LIVE | ARIRANG" at 8 PM Korea Standard Time, one day after releasing their fifth studio album "ARIRANG" on March 20. The performance marks the first time any artist has held a solo concert at Seoul's historic Gwanghwamun Square.

Breaking Ground at Korea's Civic Heart

Seoul's Metropolitan Government approved the unprecedented concert on January 23, making BTS the first artist to perform solo at the iconic plaza. Located at Gyeongbokgung Palace's main gate, Gwanghwamun Square has hosted everything from independence marches to World Cup celebrations, serving as Korea's civic gathering place for over a century.

The venue choice ties directly to the album's cultural roots. "ARIRANG" draws its name from Korea's most famous folk song-a 600-year-old melody recognized by UNESCO that expresses separation, longing, and reunion. The song became a symbol of Korean identity during Japanese occupation and the Korean War.

"We hope to reaffirm BTS' roots and love for Korea by holding this concert in a location that resonates deeply with who they are," Big Hit Music stated.

The performance will include a symbolic walk from Gyeongbokgung Palace to the stage, with Big Hit Music expecting 50 million viewers globally.

Military Service Complete, Group Returns

All seven members-RM, Jin, SUGA, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook-completed South Korea's mandatory military service between December 2022 and June 2025. SUGA was the last to be discharged on June 21, 2025, clearing the way for the group's full return.

During the hiatus, individual members released solo projects while the group worked on their comeback. The 14-track "ARIRANG" album reflects their reunion process, created during the second half of 2025 after members regrouped in Los Angeles.

Netflix Secures Global Rights

Netflix's exclusive deal covers both the March 21 concert and "BTS: THE RETURN," a documentary premiering March 27. Directed by Bao Nguyen ("The Greatest Night in Pop"), the film follows the group's reunion and album creation process.

The streaming partnership represents Netflix's first live event broadcast from Korea and continues its K-pop content expansion. The concert will reach Netflix's 300 million subscribers across 190+ countries, potentially making it the largest live K-pop broadcast in history.

World Tour Launches April 9

Following the Seoul concert, BTS kicks off their "ARIRANG World Tour" on April 9 in Goyang, South Korea. The tour spans over 80 shows across 34 cities through March 2027, covering Asia, North America, Europe, Latin America, and Oceania.

Tickets sold out rapidly across all markets. North American and European shows-41 venues total-reached full capacity within hours of going on sale in late January. Seoul's three Goyang dates sold out during the fan club presale alone, with over 100,000 fans in the online queue.

The tour's economic impact became immediately visible. Seoul hotels in central districts saw bookings surge 450% compared to 2025. Hotels.com reported international searches for Seoul travel spiked 155% within 48 hours of the tour announcement. The Plaza Seoul, overlooking Gwanghwamun Square, hit 100% occupancy for March 21 by late January.

Album Pre-Orders Shatter Records

"ARIRANG" topped Spotify's Countdown Charts Global before release, becoming the most pre-saved album on the platform. Physical pre-orders surpassed 4.06 million copies in the first week, breaking BTS's previous record of 3.42 million for "Map of the Soul: 7."

The album explores themes of identity, longing, and love across 14 tracks. Members were deeply involved in songwriting and production, channeling their individual growth during military service into group music.

BTS previously incorporated Korean heritage into major performances, including their 2020 "Tonight Show" appearance where they performed at Gyeongbokgung Palace wearing hanbok-inspired outfits.

Prior to military service, BTS generated over 5.5 trillion won annually for South Korea's economy-roughly 0.2% of the country's GDP, according to the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute.

The March 21 concert bridges Korean cultural heritage with global audiences through digital technology, positioning BTS's comeback as one of 2026's most significant entertainment events.
