SEVENTEEN DK and Seungkwan's "Blue" Goes Viral: Half-Million Album Sales Drive Asian Chart Sweep
SEVENTEEN vocal duo DK and Seungkwan are rewriting K-pop's ballad playbook. Their emotionally charged track "Blue" climbed to No. 1 on YouTube Korea's Trending Music chart while their debut mini-album Serenade achieved rare half-million seller status within 24 hours of release.
Released January 12, the six-track album sold 520,000 copies on its first day according to Hanteo, making it one of the few K-pop subunit albums to reach this milestone. The achievement stands out in an industry where ballad albums rarely match the commercial performance of dance-focused releases.
Chart Performance Across Asia
Serenade topped Japan's Oricon Daily Album Ranking on January 22, moving nearly 100,000 copies on its first day of Japanese release. The album also entered Oricon's Weekly Digital Album Ranking top 10 for the chart dated January 26.
In China, the album claimed No. 1 on QQ Music's Digital Best-Seller Album EP weekly chart for January 9-15. "Blue" ranked high on Billboard Japan's Hot Shot Songs chart for the same tracking period.
YouTube Korea provided the duo's most visible success metric. "Blue" entered the Trending Music chart at No. 27 on January 13, climbed to No. 2 by January 15, and reached No. 1 by 9 PM on January 18. Album tracks "Rockstar (DK Solo)" and "Guilty Pleasure" also charted at No. 28 and No. 30.
Viral Challenge Drives Streaming Growth
The song's accessibility sparked widespread participation through duet challenges where fans harmonize with the recorded track. "Blue" reached No. 1 on Instagram's Trending Audio chart on January 17 as fan-created videos spread across social media platforms.
Professional vocalists amplified the trend. Artists including Davichi, Gummy, Younha, 10CM, Daybreak, Lee Mujin, RIIZE's Sohee, WJSN's Yeonjung, MAMAMOO's Solar, Apink's Jeong Eunji, DAY6's Young K, BOYNEXTDOOR's Sungho and Riwoo, and TWS's Youngjae and Kyungmin released their own interpretations of "Blue," each adding stylistic diversity that maintained the song's momentum.
SEVENTEEN's official YouTube channel released an instrumental version on January 28 to facilitate continued fan participation.
Album Concept and Production
Serenade follows a relationship's emotional arc through six tracks. "Blue" explores the disconnect when partners move at different emotional paces, expressed through DK and Seungkwan's contrasting vocal tones-DK's bright clarity against Seungkwan's deeper resonance.
The album includes two solo tracks where each member contributed to writing and composition. DK's "Rockstar" addresses gratitude toward supportive relationships, while Seungkwan's "Dream Serenade" reflects on memories that provide comfort. Both co-wrote lyrics for closing track "Prelude of Love."
The duo promoted through extensive music show appearances starting January 15: Mnet's M Countdown, KBS2's Music Bank, The Seasons - 10CM's SSDAM SSDAM (where they debuted B-side "Guilty Pleasure"), MBC's Show! Music Core, and SBS's Inkigayo.
Strategic Subunit Positioning
DK and Seungkwan's release continues SEVENTEEN's strategic shift toward subunit projects as members navigate military service obligations. The 13-member group launched multiple subunits in 2025: Jeonghan and Wonwoo's JxW, Hoshi and Woozi's HxW, and S.Coups and Mingyu's CxM.
CxM's HYPE VIBES achieved the highest Billboard 200 ranking for a K-pop subunit album, demonstrating commercial viability for these smaller configurations.
DK and Seungkwan previously worked together in BSS (BooSeokSoon), a trio with Hoshi that released viral single "CBZ (Prime Time)" in January 2025. Their experience as SEVENTEEN's main vocalists and variety content creators established chemistry that translated into Serenade's emotional delivery.
Two music videos support the release. The cinematic version directed by Annie Chung features actors Lee Yoo-mi and Noh Sang-hyun portraying a couple experiencing emotional drift. An epilogue version released January 19 showcases winter landscapes filmed in Hokkaido, Japan.
SEVENTEEN continues their [NEW] World Tour with February stops resuming in Hong Kong before moving to Singapore, Bangkok, and Bulacan, Philippines.
