HYBE has applied for permits to stage a free BTS concert at Gwanghwamun Square in March 2026, turning one of Seoul's most iconic locations into the backdrop for the group's first Korean performance since reuniting after military service.

The proposed show would give 15,000 to 20,000 fans-selected through advance registration-a chance to see BTS before their massive world tour kicks off in April. Multiple dates are being considered, including March 20 (the same day their new album drops) and the following weekend.

What We Know About the Gwanghwamun Event

HYBE submitted permit applications to South Korea's National Heritage Administration for several historic sites: Gyeongbokgung Palace, Gwanghwamun Square, and Sungnyemun Gate. The company's working title for the event is "K-Heritage and K-POP Fusion Performance."

The Cultural Heritage Committee reviewed the proposal on January 20, while Seoul city officials have until January 23 to decide on using Gwanghwamun Square itself. Safety plans must be approved before anything moves forward-Gwanghwamun regularly hosts large public gatherings, so crowd management is a major consideration.

HYBE confirmed to Korean media that "discussions are currently underway" and promised official details once everything's finalized.

Why This Location Matters

Gwanghwamun Square isn't just any venue-it's where South Korea celebrates World Cup victories, holds major civic gatherings, and connects with its cultural heritage. For BTS, whose new album "ARIRANG" draws directly from Korean folk tradition, the location perfectly matches their message.

This wouldn't be BTS's first time performing at Seoul's historic sites. They filmed a 2020 NBC broadcast at Gyeongbokgung Palace, though that was a closed production rather than a public event.

The "ARIRANG" Album Connection

BTS releases their fifth Korean studio album "ARIRANG" on March 20, 2026-their first full group project in nearly four years. The album takes its name from Korea's most famous folk song, known for expressing themes of longing, separation, and reunion.

Those themes resonate deeply with BTS's journey. The seven members-RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook-spent the past few years completing mandatory military service while pursuing solo careers. They reunited in mid-2025 and worked through over 100 songs before settling on the final 14 tracks for "ARIRANG."

The album represents their most direct exploration of Korean identity and roots. After years of global success singing partly in English and collaborating with Western artists, they're returning to their foundation.

What Comes After: The World Tour

Three days after the Seoul comeback-April 9, 2026-BTS launches a 79-show world tour spanning 34 cities through March 2027. It's the largest tour ever announced by a K-pop act.

The production features a 360-degree stage that puts the group at the center of the audience, maximizing both venue capacity and fan experience. They'll hit stadiums across Asia, North America, Europe, South America, and Australia, with additional dates in Japan and the Middle East expected to be announced.

Their previous tours set records that still stand. The 2018-2019 "Love Yourself" tour became the highest-grossing tour by any artist performing primarily in a non-English language. Their 2021 Los Angeles shows at SoFi Stadium posted the biggest box office numbers any artist had seen in nearly a decade.

Promotional Strategy Signals New Approach

HYBE's promotional campaign for this comeback looks different from typical K-pop rollouts. Instead of focusing heavily on Korean broadcast appearances and music shows, they're emphasizing global landmarks.

They've already decorated the main staircase at Seoul's Sejong Center for the Performing Arts with the album artwork and release date. Similar installations are planned for New York, Tokyo, and London-treating the comeback as a simultaneous global event rather than a Korea-first release.

This shift reflects BTS's unique position as both Korean cultural ambassadors and mainstream global artists. The Gwanghwamun concert, if approved, would bridge both identities: a deeply Korean moment broadcast to the world.

The Wait Is Almost Over

BTS went on hiatus in 2022 to allow members to fulfill military obligations. Their absence left a gap in the global music landscape that their individual solo projects couldn't quite fill. Now they're back as seven, with new music that reportedly reflects everything they've learned and experienced during their time apart.

RM recently told fans the album is "really good" and urged them to look forward to it. Based on their track record and the cultural weight they're giving this comeback, he's probably not exaggerating.

Whether the free Gwanghwamun concert happens depends on permit approvals and safety clearances. But either way, March 20 marks the official return of the biggest group in K-pop history.
