Korean-Canadian Director Maggie Kang and Songwriter EJAE Take Home Trophies for Animation and Original Song

Netflix's record-breaking animated film KPop Demon Hunters secured two wins at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards on January 11, 2026, claiming Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for "Golden" at the ceremony in Beverly Hills.

The film defeated Disney's Zootopia 2, Pixar's Elio, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Movie: Infinity Castle, Arco, and Little Amélie or the Character of Rain in the animation category. Its breakout song "Golden" triumphed over tracks from Wicked: For Good, Avatar: Fire and Ash, Sinners, and Train Dreams.

From SM Entertainment Trainee to Golden Globe Winner

The ceremony's most emotional moment came when EJAE (Kim Eun-jae) accepted Best Original Song alongside co-writers Mark Sonnenblick and Lee Hee-joon. The 33-year-old singer-songwriter revealed she trained at SM Entertainment for a decade beginning in 2003 but never debuted.

"When I was a little girl, I worked tirelessly for 10 years to fulfill one dream, to become a K-pop idol, and I was rejected and disappointed that my voice wasn't good enough," EJAE said through tears. "So I leaned on songs and music to get through it, and now I'm here as a singer and a songwriter."

She concluded with a powerful message: "This award goes to people who have had doors closed on them. I can confidently say rejection is redirection. So never give up-it's never too late to shine like you were born to be." The songwriter then thanked her family and fiancé before shouting in Korean, "엄마, 사랑해요" (Mom, I love you).

After SM Entertainment, EJAE studied at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and became a sought-after songwriter, penning hits including Red Velvet's "Psycho," aespa's "Drama," and LE SSERAFIM's "So Cynical."

Director Maggie Kang's Journey from Toronto to Hollywood

Korean-Canadian director Maggie Kang, who co-directed with Chris Appelhans, emphasized the film's cultural authenticity while accepting Best Animated Feature. "Thank you to the Golden Globes and to everyone who believed that a movie so deeply rooted in Korean culture could resonate with a global audience," she said.

Born in Seoul and raised in Toronto from age five, Kang studied animation at Sheridan College before joining DreamWorks Animation. She worked on Puss in Boots, Rise of the Guardians, Kung Fu Panda 3, and served as head of story for The Lego Ninjago Movie before pitching KPop Demon Hunters to Sony Pictures Animation in 2018.

The director highlighted the creative team's approach to female characters: "We wanted to show women as we know them-really strong and bold, really silly and weird, really hungry for food and sometimes thirsty."

Record-Breaking Billboard Performance

Since its June 20, 2025 Netflix debut, KPop Demon Hunters has shattered industry records. The film became Netflix's most-watched original with over 325 million views, surpassing Red Notice by nearly 100 million viewers.

"Golden" made history as the first female K-pop single to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, spending eight nonconsecutive weeks atop the chart. The song also dominated the Billboard Global 200 for 18 weeks and set a record with 20 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart-the longest reign since the chart's 2020 inception.

The soundtrack achieved an unprecedented milestone: it became the first soundtrack in Billboard's 67-year history to place four songs simultaneously in the Hot 100's top 10. Besides "Golden," tracks "Your Idol," "Soda Pop," and "How It's Done" all charted in the region. The soundtrack debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and earned double Platinum certification by October 2025.

Theatrical Success Defies Streaming Strategy

Despite being a Netflix release, the film's theatrical sing-along version proved remarkably successful. The August 23-24 limited release grossed $18-19 million over two days, marking Netflix's first No. 1 weekend at the box office. A Halloween re-release collected an additional $5-6 million.

Awards Season Momentum Builds Toward Oscars

The Golden Globe wins position KPop Demon Hunters as a strong Oscar contender. The film previously won Best Animated Feature at the Critics' Choice Awards on January 9, 2026-just two days before its Golden Globe triumph. It also secured the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Animated Feature and earned Time magazine's "Breakthrough of the Year" recognition.

"Golden" has earned four Grammy nominations including Song of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, with the ceremony scheduled for February 2026. Academy Award nominations will be announced January 22, 2026, with the ceremony set for March 15.

The film did not win its third nomination-Cinematic and Box Office Achievement-which went to Sinners. However, the nomination itself marked a milestone as KPop Demon Hunters became the first nominee in this category to qualify primarily through streaming rather than theatrical performance.

The Story Behind the Phenomenon

KPop Demon Hunters follows fictional girl group HUNTR/X-consisting of Rumi (voiced by Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo)-who secretly battle demons while maintaining their idol careers. The trio faces their greatest challenge when rival boy band the Saja Boys, composed of disguised demons, emerges to steal fans and weaken the barrier between worlds.

The singing voices are provided by EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and REI AMI, with the voice cast also featuring Ahn Hyo-seop, Yunjin Kim, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong, and Lee Byung-hun. Sony Pictures Imageworks animated the film at its Vancouver and Montreal facilities.

Sequel Confirmed for 2029 Release

Following the film's massive success, Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation confirmed a sequel in development with a planned 2029 release. Multiple sources report Netflix intends to expand KPop Demon Hunters across various mediums including a stage musical, live-action remake, series, and two sequel films to create a trilogy.

Both the original KPop Demon Hunters and its sing-along version are currently streaming on Netflix.
