James Cameron's third Pandora epic reaches major box office milestone six days into theatrical run

The latest installment in director James Cameron's groundbreaking sci-fi saga has crossed 2 million ticket sales in South Korea, solidifying its position as the country's biggest Hollywood release of 2025. Avatar: Fire and Ash reached 2,000,014 admissions as of December 23 at 1:40 PM, according to the Korean Film Council's box office tracking system.

South Korea received the film two days ahead of the December 19 global release, premiering on December 17 as Disney's strategic choice to showcase the franchise's advanced visual effects technology. The early access reflects Korea's established reputation as a testing ground for premium cinema formats including IMAX 3D, 4DX, and ScreenX.

The film has dominated Korean theaters since opening day, holding the number one position throughout its first week. Pre-sale figures exceeded 650,000 tickets by mid-afternoon on December 23, positioning the film for strong Christmas weekend performance as families and moviegoers seek holiday entertainment.

Cameron's third Pandora chapter follows Jake Sully and Neytiri's family as they confront grief following their eldest son Neteyam's death while facing a new threat from Varang's Ash People-a hostile Na'vi tribe wielding fire as their weapon across volcanic regions of Pandora.

The Avatar franchise maintains exceptional commercial strength in South Korea. The 2009 original drew 13.62 million admissions, while 2022's Avatar: The Way of Water attracted 10.8 million viewers. Both films achieved massive global success, with the first earning $2.92 billion worldwide to become cinema's highest-grossing film, and the sequel reaching $2.34 billion for third place all-time.

Avatar: Fire and Ash launched globally with $345 million during its opening weekend, marking 2025's second-largest debut. Korea emerged as one of the franchise's strongest international markets, generating $13.6 million in its opening weekend-the highest Hollywood opening in the territory for 2025.

The film stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Oona Chaplin, and David Thewlis. Cameron directed from a screenplay he co-wrote with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver.

Premium format screenings continue driving ticket sales, with audiences praising the immersive theatrical experience. Strong word-of-mouth and repeat viewing interest suggest sustained box office momentum through the holiday season and into January 2026.
