Why 'KPop Demon Hunters' Can't Compete at BAFTAs Despite Netflix's Most-Watched Record

BAFTA has officially disqualified "KPop Demon Hunters" from competing at the 2026 Film Awards, dealing a rare setback to Netflix's record-breaking animated phenomenon.

The British Academy rejected Netflix's formal appeal on November 11, ruling that the film's UK release pattern violated theatrical eligibility requirements despite later sing-along screenings.

The Release Timing Problem

"KPop Demon Hunters" debuted on Netflix in the UK on June 20, 2025 without any theatrical screenings. Two months later, Netflix released a sing-along version in 264 UK cinemas on August 23-24, followed by additional screenings across 528 theaters during Halloween weekend.

BAFTA's rules demand "at least 10 commercial screenings in the UK for at least seven days in aggregate." While exceptions exist for "exceptional circumstances" like event cinema, the Film Committee determined Netflix's post-streaming theatrical run didn't qualify.

The streaming-first approach proved fatal. BAFTA requires films to reach theaters before or simultaneously with other distribution methods-not months afterward.

Oscars vs. BAFTAs: Different Rules

The film remains Oscar-eligible thanks to strategic US planning. Netflix arranged qualifying theatrical screenings from June 20-26 at three locations-Landmark Opera Plaza Cinema (San Francisco), Laemmle Glendale (Los Angeles), and Quad Cinema (New York)-on the same day as the streaming launch.

This simultaneous release satisfied Academy Award requirements, highlighting how different organizations interpret theatrical eligibility.

Record-Breaking Success Elsewhere

The BAFTA snub barely dents the film's massive cultural impact. "KPop Demon Hunters" reached 314.2 million views, making it Netflix's most-watched title ever and the first to cross 300 million views.

The sing-along theatrical release grossed $18-19 million over one weekend in August, giving Netflix its first #1 box office finish.

Historic Grammy Recognition

The soundtrack dominated awards recognition where BAFTA closed its doors. "Golden," performed by HUNTR/X (EJAE, Audrey Nuna, REI AMI), earned five total Grammy nominations for 2026:

  • Song of the Year
  • Best Pop Duo/Group Performance
  • Best Song Written for Visual Media
  • Best Remixed Recording (David Guetta remix)
  • Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media (full soundtrack)

"Golden" became the first K-pop song nominated for Song of the Year, spending eight weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The soundtrack made history as the first since 1995's "Waiting to Exhale" to place four songs simultaneously in the Hot 100's top 10.

Awards Season Implications

BAFTA's decision carries weight beyond one ceremony. Since both organizations began honoring animated features, no film has won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature without first securing a BAFTA nomination.

This historical pattern could benefit competitors like Disney's "Zootopia 2," Neon's "Arco," and GKids' "Little Amélie or the Character of Rain" in the race for Academy recognition.

Despite the statistical disadvantage, "KPop Demon Hunters" enters awards season as the frontrunner for Best Animated Feature at both the Oscars and Golden Globes.

What's Next

Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation confirmed a sequel scheduled for 2029. Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans will return to continue the story of Huntr/x-the K-pop girl group leading double lives as demon hunters.

The original film follows Rumi, Mira, and Zoey as they balance global stardom with protecting fans from supernatural threats, culminating in a showdown against the demonic boy band Saja Boys.
