Netflix Confirms 'K-Pop Demon Hunters' Sequel Coming in 2029
Netflix's animated phenomenon "K-Pop Demon Hunters" is getting a sequel, with Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation finalizing deals for a 2029 release.
Bloomberg first reported the news on November 5, confirming that directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans will return for the follow-up. The four-year production timeline is standard for animated features requiring extensive voice work and musical development.
The original film premiered on Netflix in June 2025 and shattered records, becoming the platform's most-watched title ever with over 325 million views. It follows fictional K-pop group HUNTR/X-Rumi, Mira, and Zoey-who secretly fight demons while dominating global charts.
Chart-Topping Success Drives Sequel
The film's soundtrack made Billboard history with four simultaneous Top 10 hits on the Hot 100. Lead single "Golden" spent eight weeks at number one and earned platinum certification from the RIAA in October.
Beyond streaming, the film topped North American box offices with $18 million during a two-day sing-along event in August-the first Netflix movie to claim the number one spot theatrically. A Halloween weekend re-release added another $5-6 million.
What's Next for HUNTR/X
Director Kang previously hinted that the sequel could explore origin stories for the three demon hunters. "We've set up so much for potential backstory," she told Variety. "There are a lot of questions left unanswered."
Under the original 2021 Sony-Netflix partnership, Sony produced the $100 million film while Netflix handled distribution. The arrangement proved successful enough for both studios to commit to the sequel despite the extended production schedule.
The film earned a 95% critics score and 99% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with praise for its animation style, Korean cultural elements, and integration of K-pop music with supernatural action.
