Seventeen V8 (Pledis Ent.)

The8 and Vernon debuted as V8 on June 29. By July 2, the unit had crossed 500,000 copies sold - making "V8" a half-million seller before the duo has performed the title track on a single broadcast stage. That changes tonight, when they take Mnet's M Countdown with "singasong" and B-side "rat race" for the first time.

The album moved fast partly because the rollout started early. A pre-release dance challenge clip dropped June 19 - ten days before the album itself - and accumulated over 120 million views on Instagram alone before the official release. The shuffle-step choreography spread on its own, which gave "singasong" social momentum before charts had anything to track. By the time the full music video landed on June 29, the audience was already built.

Chart data confirmed the reach. "V8" debuted at No. 1 on China's QQ Music Digital Best Album daily ranking, achieved Triple Gold certification on the platform within four hours, and landed at No. 4 on Japan's Line Music real-time Album Top 100. The worldwide iTunes Album chart placed it at No. 5. "singasong" entered iTunes Top Songs charts in nine countries and regions. The title track's music video was trending on YouTube in Singapore and multiple other markets within the first day.

The production credits explain some of the crossover appeal. "singasong" was co-composed by The8, Vernon, and German DJ Mechatok - a Berlin-based producer whose previous work spans European club circuits and experimental electronic releases. The track is built on hyperpop and bubblegum bass, with lyrics written in Korean, English, and Chinese, reflecting The8's Chinese background and Vernon's Korean-American upbringing. "The result naturally reflects each one's identity and manner of expression," the two said in a statement. Elsewhere on the album, Pharrell Williams wrote, composed, and produced "girlsnboys" alongside longtime Seventeen collaborator BUMZU. Dylan Brady, KIRARA, and Alice Longyu Gao also contributed tracks.

The listening party for the album, held at Grainhaus - a lounge club in Seoul - was described by attendees as resembling a rave more than a typical K-pop showcase, with the producing collaborators present in the room. It was a format K-pop acts do not typically use for album releases, and the choice tracked with what the album sounds like: a project built for a dancefloor, not a broadcast stage.

Vernon's military enlistment is expected in the coming months alongside fellow Seventeen members DK, Mingyu, Seungkwan, and Dino. "V8" is his final solo project before service. The unit's standalone concerts - "2026 VERNON THE8 [V8] LIVE" - are scheduled for July 11-12 at KINTEX in Goyang and July 17-19 at AsiaWorld-Expo Hall 10 in Hong Kong.

A pop-up store opens July 4 at HYBE's Yongsan headquarters, running through July 9.
