PlayStation Network Status Update: PSN Now Back Online, As Sony Hints At Video Rental Extensions
The PlayStation Network is now back online, after Sony executives posted a status update on the outage that took down the system for at least 12 hours which largely affected PS4 users.
"As people are tweeting, PSN is back online," said Sony Computer Entertainment president Shuhei Yoshida via the Independent. "Very sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience."
As Yoshida made the announcement, users continued to post a range of tweets and posts on Facebook to report on some problems they encountered while accessing the network.
The outage virtually affected all parts of the PlayStation Network, which in included a variety of Sony's gaming consoles as the PS Vita, PS3, PS4 and the various services available on the Sony store and online play.
In a PlayStation Network Status page update, Sony announced that PSN was "experiencing issues," and that the company's engineers were already working to address the problem.
According to Down Detector via the Independent, the outage happened "from just after 3pm UK time until about 3am," which occurred last Jan. 5 and carried over the following day.
In the meantime, Sony has confirmed it will be making an announcement regarding PS Plus, PS Now and video rental extensions, reported the Express.
However, the company didn't explain in its PlayStation Network Status update why the system was down for more than 10 hours.
The Hacker group Phantom Squad has reportedly claimed responsibility for taking down the PSN.
After the PlayStation Network was restored, a vast majority of gamers have now been able to access all PS4 features without encountering issues.
"Thanks for your patience today - stay tuned for details on PS Plus, PS Now, and video rental extensions," the Sony said in its PlayStation Network Status update.
"The PlayStation Service Status page has now been updated to show all core PlayStation services have been reinstated," the PlayStation Network Status update added.
