Will "Sherlock" season 4 be Benedict Cumberbatch's last season?

The actor recently assured fans that he will be doing more episodes of the popular BBC series in the future.

"I'm still enjoying it," he previously told Radiotimes as reported by Metro. "We'll see how the next series goes, but as I've said many times before, I'd love to keep ageing with him. Martin and I started this relatively young compared to a lot of Holmes and Watsons, so why not?'

Despite his very tight schedule as an in-demand Hollywood actor, he still loves playing the genius detective. His love for the character showed when he agreed to shoot for a special Christmas episode last year.

"The Abominable Bride" broke the dry spell that fans endured for the usual two-year wait for a new season.

"#Sherlock is like crack!!!" one fan wrote on Twitter. "I'd do anything for another new episode right now #AbominableBride."

However, the 90-minute special only made them crave for "Sherlock" season 4 even more.

Thankfully, Benedict Cumberbatch's interview revealed some promising details about the series' future.

When RadioTimes asked the Oscar-nominated actor if the one-off episodes would become a regular thing, he gave a relatively hopeful answer.

"Maybe, I don't know," he admitted. "We'll see how this one goes."

However, he quickly followed that it could be possible to set up more special episodes.

"I think if it becomes impossible to schedule a season every year, year and a half then yeah, absolutely, why not? It's a great deal of fun, this, but it does advance things. It's not just on its own," he continued.

Although it was marketed as a stand-alone episode, "The Abominable Bride" still connects to "Sherlock" season 4 as well as the last season.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, as well as the other characters in the series, appeared as both their modern and Victorian-era selves as Sherlock solved a mystery in his own "mind-palace."

It was also linked to Moriarty's death and apparent resurrection.

"Sherlock" season 4 will reportedly start filming sometime in April.
