The Dark Phoenix Accidentally Revealed In Latest 'X-Men: Apocalypse' Trailer?

The Dark Phoenix may have already been teased in the opening scene of the "X-Men: Apocalypse" trailer, hinting at a potential "Dark Phoenix Saga."

As many already know, "Apocalypse" serves as the conclusion to the "First Class" trilogy and also the final film for several of the series' actors. But according to the film's trailer, it may already be paving the way for the franchise's future.

The "X-Men: Apocalypse" trailer opens with a shadowy silhouette entering Cerebro, Professor X's device that pinpoints mutants around the world. Many speculated that it was the title villain, but director Bryan Singer confirmed with Empire that it was Jean Grey in the opening scene.

"That's actually Jean," Singer said. "Her hair makes her a little strange looking! But I don't want to explain why she's doing what she's doing..."

The following scene featured Jean waking from a nightmare. She tells Professor X, "I saw the end of the world. I could feel all this death." Xavier comforts the young mutant and assures that it was "just a dream." Singer confirmed that Xavier was just offering Jean false comfort, and that he appears much more worried in the final cut of the film that he does in the trailer.

"The take I used for the movie is a less sincere take," he explained. "In the movie it's an intense moment, a psychic moment happens between them and the take is a much more suspicious take."

Based on Singer's quotes and the "X-Men: Apocalypse" trailer, Comic Book speculates that 20th Century Fox may be setting the stage for "The Dark Phoenix Saga" franchise.

For those unfamiliar, The Dark Phoenix saga tells how Jean Grey, in an attempt to sacrifice herself to save her teammates, became possesed by a cosmic entity whose power can destroy worlds. The X-Men first fought Jean Grey while under the entity's hold, and then defended her from an alien empire once broke free from the Phoenix's possesion. Jean eventually committed suicide in order to prevent herself from turning into the Phoenix again.

Fox has yet to confirm The Dark Phoenix's appearance in the "X-Men: Apocalypse" trailer, and therefore should be taken with a grain of salt.

"X-Men: Apocalypse" premieres on May 6, 2016.
