If you're a hardcore fan of manga and anime, you are familiar with dojinshi or fan made manga of particular established series. It would be the equivalent of fan-fiction, except that they often sell it at manga and anime fests like Comiket.

The "Twilight" fanfiction that is "50 Shades of Grey" would sort of apply here.

Except the fact that dojinshi artists are often embraced by the community and ultimately are able to create and sell their original work through dojinshi discovery. It would seem that some "Monster Musume" dojinshi artists may be getting that opportunity as original creator Okayado recently traveled to a Comiket event to secure fan-made art of his own series.

Embrace of fan-made material seems to differ vastly in Japan in comparison to the U.S., or so that is how one fan in ANN forum looks at it.

"I guess he went in disguise, but the fact that he revealed himself to do it afterwards at all shows a difference in law between Japan and the United States--well, the culture, at least," said Leafy Sea Dragon.

"Creators in the United States (and Canada, and many European countries) are not allowed to even look at fan-works (or if they do, keep it a complete secret), as there have been cases where they have been sued for plagiarism by said fans claiming that the official work derived story ideas, character designs, or other creative elements from the fan-works, demanding monetary compensation."

"Dojin" is an extremely popular form of artwork, with several websites that host the work entitled "Dojinstyle" existing for the sole purpose of scanning and releasing the Japanese fan-made art. In fact, this style is particularly popular when it comes to creating NSFW versions of the stories, as it allows for a more adult exploration of certain subject matters.

In the case of the "Monster Musume" manga and anime, it would make sense for there to be plenty of "dojinshi" as the series itself is pretty racy.

Whatever your stance is on copyright and fan-art, it appears that Okayado is completely ecstatic with the process and welcomes it with open arms.
