About 41 Argentine police officers were killed after a bus fell off a bridge Monday morning. ABC News reported Tuesday that the bus was carrying 60 police officers when it driven off a bridge near northern Salta province.

Reports have revealed that the death toll may still increase as rescuers continue to search those who were trapped inside the bus. The incident also left ten police officials wounded, with four of them in critical condition.

Further reports have revealed that the incident happened after the driver allegedly lost control as it began to cross the bridge.

"For reasons that are still unknown, the bus lost control while entering the bridge and fell into the stream below," National Gendarmerie says in a dispatch, as noted by NBC News Monday.

Meanwhile, President Mauricio Macri recognized the need to improve highways in order to avoid such incident.

"We need to improve our highways so these things don't keep happening," the Argentine president tells reporters.

The president also extended his condolences to the bereaved families of the police officers who were killed in the tragic incident.

"I would like to send my most sincerest condolences to the their families and the force. We are working on the matter. This has been a very unfortunate tragedy so the Argentine people should be offering their condolences to these families," he says.

On the other hand, a governor of Salta Province said the incident was accidental, as reported by New York Times Monday.

"In this spot, the state of the road had nothing to do with the accident because it's in good condition," Governor Juan Manuel Urtubey says.

He goes on, "Yes, there are problems further on and further back, but not here."

Rosario de la Frontera Mayor Gustavo Solis warned, "Those of us who know the area try not to travel there at night.
