NBC Cancels Golden Globes Broadcast Beginning In 2022
After a backlash from Hollywood over the group that gives out the annual awards for film and television's ethics and lack of diversity, NBC announced on Monday that it would no longer air the Golden Globes ceremony in 2022.
According to Variety and Deadline Hollywood, Tom Cruise has entered the revolt orchestrated by streaming networks and studios, returning the three Golden Globe statuettes he received for his parts in "Jerry Maguire," "Magnolia," and "Born on the Fourth of July."
After the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which awards the Golden Globes prizes, promised to add more Black participants and make other improvements over the next 18 months, NBC made its announcement.
The network had initially expressed support for the program but later stated that it would wait to see if the proposals were successful. Members of the HFPA have also been accused of making sexist and racial comments, as well as begging actors and studios for favors.
In a speech, the HFPA reaffirmed its reform plans and included a comprehensive timeline. It said it would appoint a new CEO, hire 20 new members, accept a new code of ethics, and have diversity and sexual harassment training by August 2021, among other things.
In the run-up to the Oscars, the annual Golden Globes ceremony, which is attended by A-list celebrities and entertainment leaders, has become one of the most important Hollywood awards shows. However, it has been under close observation after the Los Angeles Times released an article in February revealing that the association of 87 journalists had no Black members.
Scarlett Johansson, along with Netflix, Amazon Studios, WarnerMedia, and hundreds of Hollywood's top public relations firms, announced on Saturday that they would no longer partner with the HFPA until it makes significant improvements.
Johansson advised her fellow actors to "take a step back" from the HFPA and Golden Globes ceremonies. "This has often meant facing sexist questions and remarks by certain HFPA members that bordered on sexual harassment.," she said in a statement.
