'Gravity Falls' Season 3 Is Not Happening; Creator Confirms Series Ending With Hour-long Finale

Amidst all the "Gravity Falls" Season 3 rumors, series creator Alex Hirsch finally announced that the show will end after two episodes, according to Yahoo! TV. The Disney XD series will wrap up a successful two-season run, which, according to Hirsch, is a planned ending and not a cancellation.

Hirsch, the 30-year old animator behind the series, confirmed the news on social media. In a lengthy post on his Tumblr blog, The Mystery Shack, he bid goodbye to his project, saying that it will be over after two episodes. Hirsch shared that ending the show is purely his choice, something that was decided a long time ago.

"I always designed 'Gravity Falls' to be a finite series about one epic summer - a series with a beginning, middle, and end," explained Hirsch on his Tumblr post. He expressed his concern about losing the original spark if the show goes on endlessly, or leaving behind mysteries when the show gets cancelled before it can payoff.

Disney XD echoed Hirsch's statementwith regard to "Gravity Falls" season 3, saying that it was a part of his masterful plan for the characters and the stories in the show, according to Cartoon Brew. The studio said that they respect his creative vision, even though they're disappointed to not have the opportunity to explore more of the "Gravity Falls" world.

Instead of the rumored "Gravity Falls" season 3, fans are left with just two episodes of the show to enjoy. The first is "Weirdmageddon II: Escape from Reality," and the second is the hour-long series finale, "Weirdmageddon III." The series finale is expected to outperform the show's midseason premiere, which drew the biggest audience for Disney XD ever of a regular broadcast, according to Yahoo! TV.

Hirsch seemed to leave the door open for a future revival, saying that even when he finished the story he wanted to tell, it "doesn't necessarily mean we will never see Dipper, Mabel, & Stan again," according to Cartoon Brew.
