Expert says more Himalayan glaciers will collapse

An environmental expert in the United States of America has cautioned the public about the possible collapse of more Himalayan glaciers because of warming temperatures across the globe.

Summer Rupper, a glaciologist at the University of Utah, stated in a recent interview with ABC News that the possibility of another deadly glacier break is increasing due to climate change. He said that with the increased warming in the Himalayas and the quick response of glaciers across the area, the "probability for hazards" is going up.

Rupper's firm warning to the public was released just after a devastating glacier break occurred in the Himalayas on February 7. A report said that at least nine people were killed, and more than 140 people are missing because of the tragic incident.

The said glaciologist also mentioned in the interview that there is another type of glacial activity that can be caused by warming temperature. He emphasized the probability for the ice masses to drape over topographies. The melting of glaciers can also be seen as a danger for people living near coastal areas since the seawater level may rise.

Rupper said that the finding of experts is very disturbing since it only means that people will have to look out for what can possibly happen in the next couple of years. He even uttered that the incident would follow the temperature curve, which "keeps on getting warmer" as time goes by.

"We know that temperatures are warming across the Himalayas... And we know that the rate of mass loss of glaciers has accelerated over time," he quipped, citing that these facts have a detrimental effect on everything from water resources to hazards across the Himalayan range.

Glacier breaks are one of the most feared phenomena in many parts of the world. Aside from its effects on the environment, it also imposes risks on the lives of many people.
