Video games have been the primary source of entertainment since the pandemic started. With an increase in video game consumerism comes an increase in video game streaming. And for the past nine years, one streaming site has been the dominant figure: Twitch.

June 6, 2011, marks the day that the video game community was changed forever. Justin Kan and Emmet Shear launched Twitch with the intent of live streaming or broadcasting, usually with an audio commentary, video game content. Moving forward, as gamers and video games evolved, so did Twitch. After three booming years of success, Twitch was bought by the multinational tech juggernaut Amazon, in 2014. Amazon is one of the biggest digital distributors of video games, second only to Valve's Steam store. The main reason for the acquisition was due to the potential big boost in revenue in the video game market. Safe to say, the decision to buy Twitch was not a wrong move.

Jumping to 2021, Twitch is now the prime time leader in video game streaming, beating out Hitbox, Beam, Facebook, and YouTube. 91% of all video game streaming in the world belongs to Twitch. Since 2012, the average number of concurrent viewers on Twitch has risen, and now in 2021, it has now reached more than two million+ views. Additionally, the monthly hours watched on stream has gone beyond 1.5 billion.

Last year marked another milestone for the video game streaming enterprise, Twitch. The website reached a record of 1 trillion minutes watched in 2020 alone. Truly a pog achievement.

As of writing this article, here are a few notable numbers produced by the video game streaming website as per TwitchTracker:

"1.4 billion viewers watching

58 thousand online Live Streams

2 thousand game titles being streamed

69 million hours watched daily"
