South Korea Beats the Philippines' Gilas Pilipinas in 2015 William Jones Cup at 82-70
South Korea bagged its first win in the 2015 William Jones Cup after beating Gilas Pilipinas on Monday. Lee Seung Hyun led the team after scoring 19 points in an 82-70 win over the Philippine National Team.
South Korea's ball movement during the final quarter helped them surged past Gilas in a 9-0 match. The team scored 28 points during the last quarter with four players giving at least three assists.
Aside from Lee, three players recorded double digits - Moo Tae Young with 17 points, Lee Jung Hyun with 12 points and Lee Jong Hyun with 11 points.
"They just outplayed us," Gilas' coach Tab Baldwin, reported Inquirer.net on Monday. "I thought they were the better team."
"We just have to check that [individuality]. Offensively, we just didn't have the flow."
According to an article published Monday on Bleacher Report, Terrence Romeo led team Gilas after scoring a game-high of 23 points. However, Romeo's effort fell short.
"It doesn't matter what I did in the fourth quarter because our team still lost," Romeo said. "We need to learn from our mistakes and make the team win."
Team Gilas also missed the presence of Andray Blatche, who had yet to make an appearance in this year's Jones Cup after he went back to the United States on Saturday to deal with the passing of his uncle, who took care of Blatche's ailing mother.
"Anybody who lost a close relative, and his uncle is close to him [Blatche], knows how tough it is," Baldwin spoke to Philstar last Wednesday.
The 29-year-old American-Filipino player was expected to be back next week. For the meantime, PBA top rookie pick Moala Tautuaa took over the position of Blatche but only scored two points against South Korea.
