Celebrities & Netizens Praise Golden Globes Best Actress For TV Sandra Oh For Expressing Love To Her Parents In Korean Language
Canadian actress Sandra Oh has delivered the most touching acceptance speech at the recent 76th Golden Globe Awards. Many celebrities and netizens were moved when she expressed her love to her parents in the Korean language.
Oh won the Best Actress in Television Series Drama award for her role in the BBC America thriller drama Killing Eve. The Grey's Anatomy alum took home the award against Outlander's Caitriona Balfe, Elisabeth Moss of The Handmaid's Tale, Julia Roberts of Homecoming, and The Americans' Keri Russell.
Oh is the first artist of Asian heritage to host the Golden Globes. Oh is born and raised in Canada to Korean immigrant parents.
Having an MC with Asian heritage is not the only first time in Golden Globes. Oh is also the first actress, after 39 years, of Asian heritage to have received the award. She is also the first actress of Asian descent to win multiple Golden Globes. In 2006, Oh won the Best Supporting Actress For TV Series for her role as Cristina Yang in Grey's Anatomy.
As she took the stage, Sandra Oh was touched to see her father giving her a standing ovation. She thanked everyone that she has worked with in Killing Eve, her family, and her team. Towards the end, she did not forget to make a special mention of her parents and how grateful she is to have them with her as she receives the award.
"Umma, appa. Sarang haeyo," she said in the Korean language which means "Mom, dad. I love you." She also bowed as a sign of respect and gratitude to her parents.
Oh's co-stars in Grey's Anatomy and series creator Shonda Rhimes quickly sent their warm congratulations to the actress. Kevin McKidd, Camilla Luddington, and Kate Walsh have expressed how proud they are of Oh's accomplishment.
"I am so incredibly happy for @IamSandraOh tonight. Well-deserved. Overdue. She is always best actress, y'all. Always," Rhimes tweeted
Netizens and other celebrities also congratulated Oh for her victory. She was praised for expressing her love for her parents in the Korean language.
"So happy for you @IamSandraOh and for your cute mom& dad #GoldenGlobes2019 !! Your performance in @KillingEve is incredible !!" actress Reese Witherspoon tweeted.
Killing Eve is based on Luke Jennings' Codename Villanelle novellas. It follows the life of MI5 officer Eve Polastri. She becomes obsessed with tracking down a skilled assassin, named Villanelle (Jodie Comer), who also becomes obsessed with Eve.
The first season of the series premiered in BBC America in April 2018. Killing Eve Season 2 is set to be released on April 7.
