'MIXNINE' Winners' Debut Cancellation: YG Entertainment Airs Its Side Amidst Controversies
Fans were surprised to learn MIXNINE's finalists will not be formally introduced as a group. This even resulted to netizens' complaints and criticisms of YG Entertainment for not sticking to its promise. So, to air its side, the company released an official statement regarding the controversy.
YG Entertainment started its statement by thanking all the fans who showed their support to MIXNINE, per Soompi. It then proceeds to the topic, emphasizing the news about the debut cancellation of the show's finalists came out before it even revealed an official statement.
So, to clear its name, YG Entertainment said they are "endlessly sorry and feels the great responsibility for all those disappointed" with what happened. The company admitted MIXNINE didn't garner the attention it thought it might receive. However, in spite of its poor ratings, the label's head, Yang Hyun Suk, still thought of a way to make the top nine finalists successful. So, he met with the winners' agencies.
Originally, the MIXNINE's contract period would run for four months with performances in foreign countries. But, knowing the music industry today, it is not easy to make a new group famous instantly—no matter how great they are. As the producers know this, they met with Yang Hyun Suk to discuss his plans and weigh their options.
As YG Entertainment believed four months is not enough to create new songs, prepare for music videos, choreographies, and solo concerts, the company proposed the three-year contract. In six months out of a year, the MIXNINE finalists will promote together as a group. In the other half of the year, they will be returning to their respective agencies. This will happen for about three years.
However, the MIXNINE finalists' found the new contract "burdensome." Yang Hyun Suk then changed it to only three months in a year. The first month is for preparation, while the last two months will be for promotion, but still to no avail. So, in spite of having a number of meetings, which were held in a "very comfortable" manner, the parties didn't come out with a fair agreement.
"In conclusion, YG Entertainment has no excuses," the statement read. But, it just wanted to let the fans know what really happened between them, and promised it will continue to support the MIXNINE finalists.
