'Law & Order SVU' Season 19 Update: Alum Stephanie March Is Coming Back

Stephanie March is coming back in Law & Order SVU. The actress will reprise her role as Alexandra Cabot for an upcoming episode in April.

NBC confirmed March's return in a post in Law & Order SVU social media page. March will be returning in a guest-star capacity in the longest-running procedural drama on television. However, there could be more in the future due to the departure of Assistant District Attorney Rafael Barba (Raul Esparza) at the ADA office this season. Also, the relationship between ADA Peter Stone (Philip Winchester) and Benson's team is not exactly great right now.

"It is a thrill to welcome Stephanie back to the SVU family, even for a short visit. She is, and will always be, part of SVU's DNA," executive producer and showrunner Michael Chernuchin said in a statement.

Chernuchin earlier teased that another familiar face will be making a comeback in the SVU squad room, E! News reported. Law & Order SVU has been bringing back familiar faces throughout the years. Alums Sam Waterston (DA Jack McCoy) and Tamara Tunie (Melinda Warner) have all returned to the series. Dean Winters (Brian Cassidy) appeared in the most recent episode.

Law & Order SVU bosses have yet to disclose Cabot's future in the show other than she will cross path with Lt. Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) in "Sunk Cost Fallacy" episode. Apparently, an abduction case of a woman and her daughter will be brought to the SVU's attention and Benson and Cabot will see each other again.

Why is ADA Alex Cabot a Fan Favorite in Law & Order SVU?

She may be the ADA that Law & Order SVU viewers could remember most aside from Esparza and Sharon Stone (ADA Jo Marlowe). Next to Barba, Cabot has the second highest number of episode credits (96 appearances) among the seven ADA that handled cases for SVU. She first appeared in Season 2.

Cabot is a tough lady lawyer. She faked her death in Season 5 after a notorious drug lord she is prosecuting in court was killed in his prison cell. The Columbian cartel then tried to kill her. This forced her to left the ADA office and her friends at SVU to enter the Witness Protection Program.

Cabot briefly returned in Season 6 to become a witness against Liam Connors, the man who attempted to murder her. She goes back into the Program after Connor was convicted and sent to jail. She made an appearance in Season 10 explaining that she already left the program after Connor was extradited to Ireland. March became a series regular in Season 11 but then left again to join the prosecutor's office of the International Criminal Court to help prosecute rape cases in war-torn countries.

Her last appearance was in Season 13 in which she led the prosecution team in a rape case against a man who is favored to become the next prime minister of Italy. March, later on, played the same character in Law & Order spinoff, Conviction, but the show was canceled after one season.
