'Dragon Ball Super' Episode 109-110 Spoilers: Ultra Instinct Is an Omen of a Truer Form?
"Dragon Ball Super" episodes 109 and 110 featured the long-awaited tournament match-up between Goku and Jiren. The epic battle stretched Goku to his limits until he discovered a new form of incredible power. And it may be just a precursor to a complete transformation, as discussed below. Spoilers for "Dragon Ball Super" episodes 109 and 110 follow.
The "Dragon Ball Super" one-hour special sees Jiren finally enter the fray against Goku. Goku throws everything he's got against Jiren, but nothing fazes the Grey. Not even King Kai Fist x20 as Super Saiyan Blue. Therefore Goku asks his friends to lend him energy so he can build the Spirit Bomb to use against Jiren.
If this reminds you of the battle between Goku and Frieza on Namek, well, Frieza actually brings that up in episode 110. Frieza's remark may well be a clue to how this will play out.
Goku is able to send a massive Spirit Bomb toward Jiren--who easily deflects it back! Episode 110 sees the Spirit Bomb overwhelm and apparently vaporize Goku. But he is not defeated yet. He returns--transformed.
Goku is surrounded by an aura of energy, and he now moves so speedily that Jiren can't land a blow on him. In this new form, he finally appears to be a match for Jiren--until his energy runs out.
Goku's unexpected level of power unsettles even the Gods. Whis and Beerus figure out that Goku tapped into a technique called Master of Self-Movement, a.k.a. Ultra Instinct, notes Comicbook.com. It's a technique that even gods have trouble mastering.
The energy from the Spirit Bomb temporarily powered Goku's depleted physique. In becoming a vessel for all that energy, he awakened a hidden potential-unleashing the Ultra Instinct that took over his bodily movement.
An insightful thread on Reddit notes that the Japanese name of the technique is "Migatte no Goku'i" (身勝手の極意). Note that the original Japanese characters for "Goku'i" (極 ) are not the same as the characters for "Goku" (悟空). The similarity is either coincidence or an intentional pun.
But the key takeaway from the Reddit thread is that some Dragon Ball merchandise has a slightly different name for Goku's new ability: 身勝手の極意"兆" literally "Migatte no Goku'i--Trillion." This phrase might also be interpreted as "Migatte no Goku'i Omen."
This leaves a couple of possibilities. The current Ultra Instinct form may be a mere omen or precursor to a complete transformation. Alternatively, it could be the base level of the form, and Goku will be able to level up by a trillion.
Frieza's comment about Namek may also be important. Will this storyline go the same way? Probably not--the audience should expect a twist at some point.
