'Dark Matter' Season 4: Cancelled or Renewed?

This week, Syfy aired the heart-stopping Season 3 finale of the space drama, "Dark Matter." As of this writing, the network still has not renewed the series for Season 4 but here is why the crew of The Raza has not had their final adventure yet.

"Dark Matter" has a sizable dedicated cult following. Already, viewers have started tweeting the hashtag, #RenewDarkMatter, on social media site, Twitter, in order to persuade Syfy to bring back the space drama for at least another season.

It also has consistently returned a decent ratings on par with the most successful series on Syfy. TV Series Finale has reported that Season 3 has an average of 0.15 rating from the coveted 18-49 demo group. In comparison, Season 2 recorded 0.17%, but "Dark Matter" is still in relatively safe territory.

For the total viewers, the current season has a slightly smaller average compared to the previous season. Season 3 premiered with around 587,000 viewers and, after thirteen episodes, bowed out with 686,000. The series recorded an average of 614,000 viewers this year versus 676,000 from last season.

Moreover, "Dark Matter" executive producer and showrunner, Joseph Mallozzi, bragged on his personal blog that the space drama remains to be one of the Top 10 cable shows. This week's episode even became the most-watched scripted series on SyFy.

"To put those ratings in perspective - while most broadcast shows have seen an average 25% decline in viewership between seasons," he wrote, "'Dark Matter' retained over 90% of its overnight audience."

While he does not know whether "Dark Matter" Season 4 will happen either, he, too, is hopeful that the drama will be renewed by Syfy. In an interview with SciFi News, Mallozzi teased that the upcoming season will be "madness."

"The crew of the Raza must contend with a burgeoning android insurrection amid the backdrop of an alien invasion," he said about the future of the crew. "We've seemingly painted ourselves into a creative corner, but we've already plotted our entertaining exit. Simply put, season 4 will be madness."
