The battle for New York City in Netflix's "The Defenders" ended with Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) choosing to die alongside his college sweetheart and the Black Sky, Elektra (Elodie Yung). However, before he parted ways with his fellow superheroes, the Devil of Hell's Kitchen has one request to the Immortal Iron Fist (Finn Jones): protect his city.

While fans know that the masked vigilante has survived the destruction of Alexandra's (Sigourney Weaver) hideout, he is dead to the rest of the world. This led many to ask whether Danny Rand will wear the red cowl and become the Man Without Fear in "Daredevil" Season 3.

After fifty years, many have suited up to become the Daredevil in the comic book universe. Among the superheroes who took the mantle from Matt Murdock is fellow New Yorker Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Iron Fist has also regularly stood in for the lawyer, particularly during the "Civil War" arc.

While Cox could not confirm nor deny if Danny Rand will become the protector of Hell's Kitchen in Matt Murdock's absence, he is open to the idea. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 34-year-old talked about the dynamic between the pro-bono lawyer and the billionaire.

"Danny looks up to Matt a little bit, as a sensible older brother who has been doing this for a lot longer," Cox explained. "At the same time, there's a mutual respect. Matt is very impressed with Danny's fighting techniques, and his skills, and his style."

Is this why, out of all The Defenders, Matt chose to ask Danny to help Hell's Kitchen? Considering that both Matt (through Scott Glenn's Stick) and Danny have martial arts training from K'un L'un, it would make sense for the former to choose the latter as his successor.

Matt Murdock would also need a lot of help in "Daredevil" Season 3 if the rumors that the Netflix will finally explore Frank Miller's "Born Again" arc on the small screen. The upcoming season of the popular superhero series for television will begin filming later this year. Expect new episodes to drop in 2018 on Netflix.
