'The Defenders': Here Is How The Marvel-Netflix Universe Will Change After Superhero Team-Up
The wait is finally over. In Marvel's "The Defenders," Daredevil (Charlie Cox) has teamed up with his fellow street-level superheroes Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) to save New York City. After the massive war against Alexandra (Sigourney Weaver), all four heroes will emerge significantly changed.
Similar to "Avengers: Infinity War," Netflix's "The Defenders" is the culmination of all story lines in all four superhero series. Starting with "Daredevil" Season 1, Marvel has introduced The Hand, an underground organization that has been controlling the city and the villains of the new Marvel series on Netflix. Thus, superhero team-up will mark the end of Phase 1 of the Marvel universe on Netflix.
In an interview with Digital Spy ahead of "The Defenders" premiere, Jones reveals that the new superhero series will launch Phase 2 of their own narratives. The actor also hints that a team-up between Iron Fist and Luke Cage might also happen in their own solo series.
"Let's just say there are certain events that happen at the end of 'The Defenders' which are going to rock everyone's world," he states. " So people aren't going to be the same after the end of 'The Defenders.'"
He also shares that there is an undeniable chemistry between his character, Danny Rand, and Colter's Luke Cage. Marvel fans are very much aware that the two superheroes are best friends in the comics and even teamed-up as the "Heroes for Hire."
Meanwhile, Deborah Ann Woll who plays Karen Page also explains that, while each hero will come out of the battle changed, the threat that brought all four of them together will perish by the end of the new series. This will allow new stories, and maybe even bigger threats, to be introduced in "Daredevil" Season 3 and "Jessica Jones," "Luke Cage," and "Iron Fist" Season 2. Phase 2 of the Marvel-Netflix universe could also include Jon Bernthal's solo series, "The Punisher," which is expected to premiere later this year.
This, of course, is not to say that the superhero team will part ways and never see each other again. Marvel TV's Jeph Loeb told Collider this year that "The Defenders" Season 2 has not been confirmed as of yet but considering the series' massive success (it is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes), a season renewal is probably on the way.
If "The Defenders" gets another season, it might take a few more years before it lands on the small screen. "Jessica Jones" Season 2 is currently filming while cameras will start rolling for "Daredevil" Season 3 later this year. Both series are scheduled to premiere some time next year, Meanwhile, both "Luke Cage" and "Iron Fist" have been renewed for Season 2.
All four series still have to air before another team-up happens. In the meantime, Marvel's "The Defenders" Season 1 is now streaming on Netflix.
