Samsung 'Phablets' on the Rise, Selling over 75,000 Units in Just Three Days
It looks like the newly launched S6 Edge+ and Note 5 will pull the company from its current struggles with sales. It looks like there's a new device trending nowadays - the 'phablet'.
South Korea's tech giant has sold over 75,000 units of its smartphone/tablet - hence, phablet - models in just three days after their debut on Thursday (and Friday in North America). Eager customers in Japan, China and major markets worldwide will get their hands on the latest Samsung gadgets starting August 28.
A report by Yonhap on Sunday has revealed that industry data shows the average units sold in one day is around 25,000. This is more than twice the combined sales - at 10,000 units in a day - of Galaxy Note Edge and Note 4 during their release on September 2014.
S6 Edge+ and Note 5's successful sales account for approximately 30% in the local smartphone market, helping boost Samsung's mobile device market shares to more than 70%.
To this, an industry official has stated, "Samsung may continue its solo lead in the market down the road, as there's not much of a solid competition to speak of in South Korea at the moment." Considering the company's direct competitor in the country, LG, hasn't dabbled with phablets yet and the craze over this new device is still fresh, the high sales might just keep on rising.
In case this warm reception and strong sales extend to international markets, competing head on with Chinese smartphone brands and Apple won't be as difficult as it currently is.
The release of iPhone devices and the growth of Chinese tech companies have hurt Samsung's sales, which in turn has affected its mobile business. The division that generates major revenue has a decreasing operating profit at 2.76 trillion won in Q2, down by 37.5% on-year.
