Park Bo Gum Offered To Play Monkey King In tvN's Epic Fantasy Drama
It may have taken awhile after the success of his drama "Moonlight Drawn By Clouds" but it seems like fans of Park Bo Gum may have something to celebrate soon. The actor has been offered the lead role in a fantasy drama written by the Hong sisters and is currently reviewing the role.
According to a report by Soompi, Park Bo Gum has been offered the role in the drama Hwayugi, a fantasy series loosely inspired by the popular Chinese tale "Journey to the West" in which a monk travels with four companions including Sun Wukong, or the mischievous Monkey King. Sun Wukong is the role that has reportedly been offered to Park Bo Gum.
If he accepts the role, another actor who is being offered one of the major roles is "Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim" star Cha Seung Won. He is expected to play the role of Woo Hwi Chul, the Bull Demon King. As his and the Monkey King's characters are polar opposites, it is expected that the roles of Che Seung Won and Park Bo Gum will clash a lot in the series.
In a report by Drama Beans, early information about the fantasy drama hint that the tVN fantasy series' take a modernized approach to the tale and will cast an actress in the role of the monk. Park Bo Gum's Monkey King will play a god who was exiled to the human world as a punishment for his corruption. As he reforms, he manages to come across the monk who has the ability to unseal his powers. Cha Seung Won's character in the human world is described as a gentleman but because of his natural instincts as a god, it is expected that his own exile will not be as easy.
Aside from Park Bo Gum and Cha Seung Won, the Hong sisters have signed on for the drama. Queen Seon Deok Director Park Hong Kyun is also set to helm the series.Hwayugi is expected to maintain tvN's momentum in the fantasy series genre after the success of megahit "Goblin" and the positive reviews of "Bride of Habaek" which started airing last week.
