A new "Star Trek" television series is set to air in January 2017, according to CBS.

The press release confirms that the new series has been greenlit into production, with Alex Kurtzman serving as the executive producer. Kurtzman co-wrote 2009's "Star Trek," and 2013's "Star Trek Into Darkness."

CBS Television Studios will produce the new "Star Trek" television series, working closely with Kurtzman's own production company, Secret Hideout. This is not a reboot of any of the previous series in the franchise; new characters will be introduced, and imaginative new worlds will be brought to life, thanks to modern cinematography and CGI, according to io9.

With a new set of characters, audience can expect that this is a departure from the movie series, according to sources. The first two involved the original characters from the 1966 original series.

Furthermore, the third movie, "Star Trek Beyond," is not related to the upcoming series in any way. The film is on schedule for Summer 2016 release, and will be distributed by Paramount Pictures.

Only the premiere episode of the "Star Trek" television series is slated for a network release in January 2017. The subsequent episodes are going straight to CBS All Access, the network's digital and video-on-demand platform, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The new "Star Trek" is the first original series for CBS' VOD and live streaming service.

The "Star Trek" series will initially be available in the U.S. to CBS All Access subscribers, but will also be available internationally via CBS Studios International. The series will be distributed for TV and for multiple platforms worldwide, as reported by the Hollywood Reporter.

The "Star Trek" franchise is turning 50 years old in 2016, and the new "Star Trek" television series is the perfect addition to one of the most successful entertainment franchises, according to the official Star Trek website. What started as a television series now continues with another series, only this time, it is available in multiple platforms.
