Samsung Electronics will soon begin mass production for the Exynos 8890, the company's new mobile application processor. This is the processor reports predict will be used for Samsung's upcoming flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S7.

The Korea Herald reported Wednesday that production for the Exynos 8890 chipset will begin as late as December this year at the company's manufacturing lines in Giheung, Gyeonggi Province.

This system on chip (SoC), which goes by the codenames M1 or Mongoose, is Samsung's first customized application processor. It will be built upon ARM's v8 core architecture, with Samsung making some changes to the standard chip design.

The octa-core Exynos 8890 will reportedly boast improved power efficiency and graphics performance, thus addressing the battery life complaints raised for the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, Tech Times noted Thursday.

The chipset tested at 2.3 gigahertz reportedly clocked in a benchmark a combined score of 6,908 points in both single and multi-core tests. With this score, the Exynoss 8890 beat Apple A9's combined score of 6,817 points.

GSM Arena also noted Oct. 28 that Samsung's SoC will reduce production costs for its smartphones while ensuring optimized performance, giving the company a competitive boost in the market.

The Exynos 8890 is Samsung's entry to the semiconductor market. Intel, Apple, Qualcomm, AMD and ARM are the only companies with their own CPU designs.

"Designing its own mobile core will allow Samsung, which produces both smartphones and semiconductors, to gain competitive edge over Apple and Qualcomm in reducing cost and optimizing chip products for smartphones," an industry insider told Korea Herald.

News about the Exynos 8890 first came about following the rumored early release of the Galaxy S7, Samsung's upcoming flagship smartphone.

According to news reports, Samsung will introduce the Galaxy S7 in January, to compete with the release of the Apple 6S and 6S Plus smartphones.
