The Microsoft HoloLens is a step in the direction of AR. The device can make calls just like a mobile phone.

May 8th 2017: CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella previously hinted that 2017 would see the launch of the ultimate mobile device from Microsoft, by making the following statement, "We will continue to be in the phone market not as defined by today's market leaders, but by what it is that we can uniquely do in what is the most ultimate mobile device."

The CEO took to Molly Wood this week about a wide range of topics like Visas, Data privacy etc. Satya Nadella is also seen making this following statement"...when you say, we'll make more phones, I'm sure we'll make more phones, but they will not look like phones that are there today".

Combine this statement with the earlier intentions that led Microsoft to revamp the Surface lineup and we might just have a new Surface Phone in the market by the end of this year. If what Microsoft says is true, we might just have a hybrid mobile in the books this year. Unlike other AR solutions, Microsoft's HoloLens is a stand-alone PC designed to function while maintaining mobility. It comes with the standard features of a smartphone that include making calls, third party applications and the Internet.

HoloLens could be the "phone" that is not actually anything like the traditional mobile phone. With a very little market share in the smartphone industry and comparatively low expectations, Microsoft has the chance to innovate and develop something new.

Industry experts predict the launch of the new Surface Phone to take place during the Windows 10 update that has been planned for a late Q3 release in 2017. If Microsoft plays its cards right, the surprise Surface Phone might be ready for a launch by the end of September this year.
