Oprah Winfrey ‘Secret Son’ ‘Ambushes’ Her In New York; Talk Show Host Sets Record Straight
In an exclusive on the phone Interview with Nany O'Dell, media magnate Oprah Winfrey set the record straight; on a tabloid released story that she was "ambushed" by her "secret son," according to ET Online.
Winfrey did not have much time to react when the "ambush" happened earlier this month in New York.
"I met Calvin around the early '90s, I think it was 1992," said the talk show host. "We were shooting in the projects in Chicago and I was sitting on set during a break, and this cute little sparkly-eyed boy came underneath the yellow tape to hand me a soda."
"I was so charmed by him that I started talking to him about his family, his school life, and found out that he was in a situation where his mother didn't have a job and they were stuck in the projects," said Oprah. She verifies that Calvin Mitchell is not her birth son.
Oprah Winfrey and partner Stedman Graham helped Calvin's mother find a job, enrolled Calvin in a private school, and took them out of the projects, reveals US.
After taking Mitchell under their wing, Oprah received a call from the principal saying that Calvin had not been attending class.
Winfrey and Graham visited the family and told them they could not wake up on time for school.
The American billionaire realized that the family did not have clocks; so they went to K-mart and got a bag full of clocks. They brought the clocks back to the family and taught them to set the alarm. Eventually Mitchell was expelled from school.
Oprah gave Calvin another chance and enrolled the teen in a private boarding school in Mississippi. The star wanted to take Calvin out of the environment he grew up in; thinking it may help Mitchell.
The teen dropped out again because the "teachers didn't like him." Said Mitchell; in an interview with RadarOnline.com earlier this month.
Oprah Winfrey discovered that her "ambush" meeting was orchestrated by Calvin Mitchell and The National Enquirer.
"When I realized the whole thing was a setup, I was no longer interested in speaking to him," said Winfrey.
