‘The Liar And His Lover’ Updates: Netizens Slam Red Velvet’s Joy’s Acting Amidst tvN Drama’s Lackluster Debut
Red Velvet's Joy's small screen debut with the drama "The Liar and His Lover" was marred with criticisms given negative feedback from netizens. Meanwhile, the new tvN series already saw a drop in TV ratings during its first-week broadcast.
"The Liar and His Lovers" is one of the promising new dramas from tvN with a cast that features a mix of veteran South Korean celebrities, rookie stars and Kpop idols. Red Velvet's Joy was tapped to portray the lead character So Rim, alongside Lee Hyun Woo who plays the gifted composer Han Gyul.
Shortly after the tvN production released its first two episodes, netizens expressed their frustration and disappointment over Red Velvet's Joy's onscreen performance. Online comments for "The Liar and His Lover," as compiled by All Kpop, highlighted the Kpop idol's poor acting ability.
Some netizens described her acting as awkward, while some fans claimed that her acting talent was not good enough for her to play a lead role. Other critics even questioned why "The Liar and His Lover" showrunners chose to cast a Kpop idol to portray So Rim when they could have picked other talented actresses.
Despite the netizens' criticisms, "The Liar and His Lover" director Kim Jin Min shared in an earlier press event for the tvN drama that he was satisfied with Red Velvet's Joy's portrayal of her character. However, the filmmaker admitted that he had initially had apprehensions when he chose the Kpop singer for the said role, Korea Herald quoted the director as saying. He stated, "It's either I go down or up with this one, is how I thought of Joy."
Meanwhile, "The Liar and His Lover" debuted on March 20, Monday, with a viewership share of 1.5 percent across the South Korean nation and 1.7 percent in Seoul, according to Nielsen Korea. However, the ratings for the tvN drama's second episode dropped to 1.4 percent and 1.3 percent nationwide and in Seoul, respectively.
