'Descendants of the Sun' Continues Its International Popularity Topping Twitter Trends 2016 and Getting New Airing
"Descendants of the Sun" may have ended its run on April but its popularity has yet to cease this 2016. The Korean drama series has officially marked its international fame by being recognized in Twitter Trends 2016 and by getting a new broadcast in Europe.
With the release of Twitter Trends 2016, the South Korean TV series has overtaken multiple shows like "Orange is the New Black," "Stranger Things," and "The Voice" among others. "Descendants of the Sun" was listed as the fourth top trending TV shows, following "Game of Thrones," "The Walking Dead" and "Grey's Anatomy," respectively. DOTS, as is dubbed by viewers, is the only Asian show to make the list, more so the only K-drama series to gain so much attention.
During its run, the KBS drama series was a major hit in South Korea and received immense popularity across Asia. Much to the enjoyment of international fans, DOTS has been available globally through online platforms particularly Viki. However, it is now getting its first European broadcast through a non-state Greek TV channel.
The Korean Embassy in Greece announced that TV100 from Thessaloniki will be airing "Descendants of the Sun" starting on December 7, as reported by Soompi. The series is expected to run for 19 weeks, featuring the original 16 episodes and the 3 special episodes of staff interviews and behind-the-scenes footage. DOTS will also supposedly be available across the areas of Greece and Cyprus via cable.
To this, ambassador Ahn Young-Jip of the Korean Embassy in Greece has stated, "We hope that cultural exchange between Korea and Greece will deepen with the broadcast of "Descendants of the Sun."
The Korean Embassy in Greece, along with TV100, expects "Descendants of the Sun" to captivate its new viewers with its plot, casting, and especially setting where many scenes feature popular Greek tourist locations like Zakynthos and Arachova.
"Descendants of the Sun" is a romance drama set in a fictional country "Uruk." Captain Yoo Shi Jin, portrayed by Song Joong Ki, and medical doctor Kang Mo Yeon, played by Song Hye Kyo, falls in love at first sight. However, due to their jobs and principles, the two decided to break up and relieve themselves from any relationship commitment. Months later, due to their professional duties, the two met in "Uruk" where their love gets tested once more.
