‘2016 MAMA’ ratings have dropped by more than half compared to last year.

MAMA or Mnet Asian Music Awards may be considered as one of the biggest gatherings in the K-Pop world but for whatever reason, the ceremony is not attracting a lot of viewers. In fact, '2016 MAMA' ratings have even dropped by more than half compared to last year.

The recorded '2016 MAMA' rating, as reported by Nielsen Korea, was 1.2% for all 3 parts. That's an average of 1.15% for the first part, 1.39% for the second part, and 1.10% for the third part. Surprisingly, the third part recorded the lowest rating when it contains all the major awards.

'2016 MAMA' ratings were lower than last year's ratings by more than one half. Last year's MAMA recorded an average rating of 3%. That is higher than this year's ratings of 1.2% by more than one half.

Some viewers say that the big decrease in '2016 MAMA' ratings was due to the absence of YG Entertainment artists' in the said ceremony. It was only a few weeks away from the ceremony when the entertainment company announced that their artists couldn't attend this year's MAMA.

Mnet Asian Music Awards is one of the major K-Pop music awarding ceremonies. It is hosted by CJ E&M through its music channel Mnet. It aims to bring all the big names in the music industry, not only from South Korea but also from neighboring countries like China (including Taiwan and Hong Kong), Japan, Indonesia, and even from Canada and the United States. It started in 1999 and was said to be the first and only Korean music awards ceremony when it started.

'2016 MAMA' was the 18th year of the ceremony. It was held in AsiaWorld-Expo in Hong Kong on December 2, the 7th time that it was held outside of South Korea. It was simultaneously broadcasted live in South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, and the US.
