Two Heavyweights Agreed to Work Together to Oust Park
People's Party Representative Ahn Cheol-soo and Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon recently came to an agreement --- to oust President Park. These two heavyweights agreed to work together to oust Park right after their meeting on Wednesday, November 9, 2016. This is following President Park's plan on handing over the reins of the Cabinet to the prime minister. Park asked the opposition-controlled National Assembly last Tuesday, November 8, to recommend a candidate for prime minister so she can hand over the reins to him.
Both Ahn and Mayor Park came to disagree with President Park's proposal believing that it is an "attempt to evade accountability" and an "ill-fitted measure in clearing up confusion." That led to these two heavyweights to agree on working together to oust Park if she refuses to step down from her office. Both heavyweights think that President Park is playing some tricks to hold onto power.
"It is not right for a new prime minister, a non-elected figure, to control the administration for the entire 14 months - the remainder of Park's presidential term," Ahn said during an interview. "It will just put us into a bigger crisis. The fastest way of coping with this quandary is taking Park down and putting up a new leader," he added.
"This is the public's call and politicians are obliged to put it into action," Mayor Park said in agreement to Ahn's statement.
"Ahn suggested at first that we gather figures from across the political spectrum but in the end he saw eye to eye with me to do so gradually and join forces among opposition leaders first considering the people's negative sentiment towards the ruling bloc," the mayor added.
These two heavyweights who agreed on working together to oust Park are planning to arrange an emergency meeting of political leaders. They said they need to discuss how to manage the national crisis brought by President Park's corruption scandal involving her confidant Choi Soon-sil.
