'Asura: The City of Madness' Tops Weekend Korean Box Office
The Korean Film Council announced on Monday that the latest movie of Director Kim Sung Soo titled "Asura: The City of Madness," led the weekend Korean box office earning 14 billion won ($12.5 million) ticket sales on its opening week.
In an article, The Korea JoongAng Daily reported that the sales of the movie made up 43.8 percent of the total movie ticket sales last weekend even though the movie has an R rating.
"Asura" opened at 1,278 cinemas in South Korea and has reportedly sold 1.8 million tickets by the end of the weekend following its release on September 28. The movie stars popular actors such as Jung Woo Sung and Hwang Jung Min. It tells the story of a man who struggles to survive after being entangled in corruption.
The second place for the biggest box office hit belongs to "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" by Tim Burton. The movie is based on the 2011 New York times best-selling novel by Ransom Riggs. The fantasy movie revolves around the story of Jake and Miss Peregrine, who takes care of children with extraordinary abilities from evil forces. The movie sold 740,000 tickets since its release last week.
The third highest-grossing movie on the Korean box office is the third installment of the Bridget Jones movie series, "Bridget Jones's Baby." The rom-com sequel has sold 330,000 tickets as of the end of its opening week.
Tom Hanks' movie titled "Sully" took the fourth spot at the weekend box office. It has ticket sales of 180,000 since its release last week. The movie is about Captain Sully Sullenberger who made a miraculous emergency jet landing in Hudson River in 2009.
"The Age of Shadows" took the fifth place after leading the box office for three consecutive weeks. The movie's total ticket sales reached 7 million.
Hollywood movies "Ben-Hur" and "Pete's Dragon" round up the top movies in the weekend Korean box office.
