‘New Warriors’ Comedy Series In Development; Could Anna Kendrick As Marvel’s Squirrel Girl Come True?

Anna Kendrick to star as Squirrel Girl in planned "New Warriors" series?

The Marvel Cinematics Universe expanded media is about to get some comedic injection with a live action series of the "New Warriors" reportedly in the works, meaning that the prospect of Anna Kendrick becoming the "New Warrior" Squirrel Girl is another inch closer to becoming reality.

TV Line reported that Marvel is in the works with ABC Studios; the people behind the serial adaptations in the MCU like the network's own "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." and the Netflix series "Jessica Jones" and "Daredevil;" to develop a live action adaptation of the New Warriors superhero team.

To those unfamiliar with the characters, the New Warriors are, as the name implies, a team of younger superheroes that are like the teenaged version of the Avengers. The team first showed up in an issue of "The Mighty Thor," and has gone on to star in their own titular publication series. The team's first prominent appearance on television was in the ongoing "Ultimate Spider-Man" cartoon series, where their membership included Squirrel Girl for the first time.

For the live action "New Warriors" series, Squirrel Girl is set to become one of the fronting members of the superhero team according to sources.

It was during a piece that Net-A-Porter did on "Pitch Perfect" star Anna Kendrick that she mentioned the character. Apparently, her brother gave her a copy of one of Squirrel Girl's comics because he thought she should play the character. The prospect then sent the Internet and Marvel fans abuzz, with "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" director Edgar Wright posting a message on Twitter endorsing the actress for the character.

Wright posted "in Scott Pilgrim: Superman, Cap America, Human Torch, Punisher, Cap Marvel, Lego Robin & The Atom. Get @AnnaKendrick47 a Squirrel Girl film," noting the fact that the actors in his film all have had superhero roles in either Marvel and DC franchises and so Marvel should get Kendrick for the character.

As an animal themed superhero, Squirrel Girl's powers are as much as her moniker suggests. Aside from the standard bill of increased physical attributes, Squirrel Girl can also communicate and control squirrels to either attack or distract other characters. At a glance, Squirrel Girl's statistics suggests her to be at the lower end of the power scale in the Marvel universe; she has actually beaten some of the most powerful entities like Doctor Doom, Baron Mordo, Ego the Living Planet, and Thanos. Her official stats are actually off the scale, which suggests that she is one of the most powerful entities in the Marvel universe, though her abilities have almost always been colored in a comedic light.

As a character with a penchant for metaphysical commentary, coupled with her comedic ability to utterly demolish even the most powerful beings in existence, many believe that Squirrel Girl would fit Kendrick quite well. She also has the buck teeth for it already.
