‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Sources Claim Zendaya Playing Mary Jane
It seems that the mysterious character that singer and actress Zendaya will be playing in the upcoming "Spider-Man: Homecoming" has finally been revealed, with the revelation going in stark contradiction to prior announcements about her role.
The Wrap reported that sources close to the production of "Spider-Man: Homecoming" have come forth to reveal that Zendaya is playing none other than another lice action version of Mary Jane, one of the most famous and iconic love interests for Peter Parker/Spider-Man who will be played by Tom Holland.
An earlier report by Deadline said that Zendaya's character was named simply as Michelle, though the information from the sources contradict that. It could be surmised that somewhere along the months since Zendaya's casting was announced, the producers of "Spider-Man: Homecoming" may have changed their minds with the character if the original information was simply not released to misled the fans.
According to the new report however, a draft of the script for "Spider-Man: Homecoming" has various instances of Zendaya's character dropping hints that she is actually Mary Jane. This suggests that the role will be treated with some mysteriousness in the film, with the possibility that Zendaya's character actually is Mary Jane but has to hide her identity for some reason.
Kirsten Dunst previously played the character in Sony's original "Spider-Man" trilogy directed by Sam Raimi, a role the actress played opposite Tobey Maguire.
The possibility of the prior information simply being a misdirection was brought up in the report, with the publication citing the big twist that turned up near the end of the finale of Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" trilogy.
In the third film, "The Dark Knight Rises," it was revealed that Marion Cotillard's character was actually none other than Batman's love interest and occasional enemy Talia al Ghul, a fact that was kept secret in conjunction with the film's twist on the character.
Back to "Spider-Man: Homecoming," the is set to be the Marvel Cinematics Universe' first take on a film version of the character after finally regaining the film rights to "Spider-Man" from Sony. Tom Holland made his debut as everyone's favorite Friendly Neighborhood Webslinger back in this year's spring blockbuster "Captain America: Civil War," where the teenaged hero was recruited by Tony Stark/Iron Man in the titular conflict against Captain America.
For "Spider-Man: Homecoming," the film will not be an origin story for the character dspite being his first standalone film. Director Jon Watts' work will set is as a high school film, only including superpowers. Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role as Iron Man in the film, reportedly as a mentor to the younger hero.
"Spider-Man: Homecoming" is slated to hit theaters in July 7, 2017.
