The Wrap's announcement that Zendaya is Mary Jane Watson ended months of frenzied speculation on what the 19 year old singer actress will play in Spider-man homecoming.
Codename Michelle
Zendaya joined the Spider-man homecoming cast in March and director Jon Watts reconfirmed her participation in July's Comic-con. However, it was never announced that Zendaya is Mary Jane Watson. No details were given about her part. Instead her role was given the code name "Michelle" to avoid spoiling the fans.
Marvel is careful to reboot Spider-man's character and a lot of effort had been given to keep key information about the movie under wraps especially Zendaya's role.

The Wrap asked official confirmation if Zendaya indeed is Mary Jane Watson from Sony but the company refused to comment. Nobody from Marvel or Zendaya hersef gave any confirmation to the announcement. Nonetheless Spider-man fans are thrilled.
