Twitch Acquires Premiere MMO Tool And Database Website Curse
The powers of the versatile video gaming tool and database Curse is set to get intimate with the streaming service provided by Twitch, as the latter has announced that it is set to acquire the former with apparent plans to begin extending outside its niche market.
For many video gamers, especially those who frequent the massively multiplayer online game market, Curse is a comprehensive and nigh mandatory tool as they explore the inner reaches of the game in their quest to get the latest loot and defeat the strongest bosses. For gamers who prefer to play and pander to an audience, Twitch allows them to indulge in their dreams within the limelight by allowing them to stream their gaming sessions to audiences worldwide.
Now, Venturebeat reported that the two services are coming together with Twitch announcing that it has struck a deal with Curse to acquire the gaming database. Even going to the website places players face to face with an announcement of the deal, and it looks like the Curse client is also getting some revamps.
Curse is a prominently used tool used by gamers to either adjust or add to their gaming, with the website hosting a database that carries both player-created programs, or mods, for a game as well as other information about the same game. With the site's client, Curse users can download mods that either change their gaming experience either for convenience or simple fun, provided the game's creators allow the use of third-party programs.
By comparison, Twitch is strictly a streaming service though it has managed to flourish in its niche by being the primary tool used by gamers and the media alike to reach out to their audiences.
"We've long been fans of Curse, which is an innovator in the games industry with a strong culture built around its offerings -from Curse Voice and Curse Client to Gamepedia," Twitch chief executive officer Emmett Shear told reporters. "While it's still early days for Twitch and Curse, we're kindred spirits in many ways and are looking forward to working together to enhance our users' gaming experience."
On the Curse side, chief executive officer Hubert Thieblot said that they "have been avid gamers and Twitch users for quite a long time, so we're thrilled to be joining the Twitch family. I'm really excited to see how we can bring Curse services into the Twitch network, and provide an unparalleled experience to both Curse and Twitch users. This is going to be terrific for the millions of players who use Curse, and for the larger gaming community."
Neither party has spoken about the specific numbers of the deal.
