‘Metal Gear Survive’ Multiplayer Game Announced By Konami At Gamescom 2016
The first project in the post Hideo Kojima era of the "Metal Gear" franchise has been announced by Konami at the media conference day of this year's Gamescom 2016 at Cologne, Germany.
IGN reported that "Metal Gear Survive" will be a four-player cooperative centric game that wil place players in the shoes of the surviving members of the Militaires Sans Frontieres, the private military contractor group started by Big Boss in the "Metal Gear" universe that pioneered the idea of privatized militaries.
While the game will apparently retain the franchise' focus on stealth based gameplay, and will begin in the same universe as the other main entries in the series, it will actually take place in an alternate universe filled with a myriad of horrifying creatures covered in crystals.
The premise of "Metal Gear Survive" will have the surviving Militaires Sans Frontieres members being sucked into wormholes that showed up after the events of "Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes" after that game's climactic ending. Interestingly, the game might actually provide some insight into how the surviving MSF soldiers that players eventually rescue and recruit in "Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain" did so.
The trailer for the game shows what happened to those soldiers that remained on the crumbling Mother Base after Big Boss escaped, due to an attack by XOF forces. The setting of the alternate universe gave off a zombie apocalypse feel, with the marooned soldiers struggling to survive within the remnant of Mother Base sucked in with them and against a horde of crystalline zombies. The trailer ended with major hints that a Metal Gear, or similarly titanic creature, is also in the area.
"Metal Gear Survive will offer a fresh take on the series' famed stealth elements, but within a unique co-op setting that is designed for a truly engrossing multiplayer experience," said Tomotada Tashiro, the president of Konami Europe, to reporters.
Other gameplay elements reportedly include a deeper focus on scavenging; though a feature present in past "Metal Gear" games, this upcoming title might give more focus on the system with regards to how the stranded soldiers will "survive" as indicated in the title. Some new weapons were also shown; like a bow capable of firing specialized arrows with spinning drill bits for heads.
The game will be the first entry in the series after "Metal Gear" progenitor Hideo Kojima left Konami after the production of the collective "Metal Gear Solid V" titles. "Metal Gear Survive" will release to all major platforms in 2017.
