South Korea Hopeful for a Medal in Women's Golf Tournament in Rio
The South Korean men's golf team ended their Rio Olympics campaign without any medals, turning all eyes on the women's golf team that has some of the best female golfers in the world. They will attempt to win medals in the said sports event as golf finally returned as an official medal event for the first time in more than a century.
Korea JoongAng Daily wrote that the South Korea's women's golf team is the only team with four players in its roster out of 34 countries that will participate in the event. The team is composed Park In-Bee, Kim Sei Young, Chun In Gee, and Amy Yang.
Based on the golf Olympic regulations, the top 15 players in rankings as of July 11 may play for the Olympics with a limit of four golfers for each country Park, Kim, Yang, and Chun were ranked No. 3, No. 5, No. 6, and No. 8, respectively, in the Rolex Rankings. The United States has three players on its roster.
Head Coach Park Se Ri is hopeful and confident at the same time about a possible podium sweep for the South Korean female golfers. She said, "Our goal is to take all three medals for ourselves."
This claim might just come true due to the fact that the four athletes have a total of 25 LPGA trophies together.
Coach Park further added, "Kim is definitely on an upward trajectory. You can always count on Yang to be steady on the field. Park is the most experienced of all and Chun is the most adaptive when it comes down to playing in an unfamiliar course. I saw the men's tournament earlier and found out this course has so many variables, so it is difficult to pinpoint who will do best. They are feeling the pressure to capture a medal. My role is to help them approach this tournament more relaxed."
The first round of the women's golf tournament at the Rio Olympics will start tonight at 7:30 p.m., Korea time.
