The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year

It seems that console fans of "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt," the latest installment of CD Projekt Red's action role playing video game series "The Witcher," will have to start over if they wish to purchase the game's definitive game of the year edition as the new version in the bundle will not carry over save files from the previous versions.

"The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year" edition was recently announced, with the bundle coming out this August 30. As with any game of the year (GOTY) version, the pack will have all of the game's previously released downloadable content as well as the two expansion packs; "Heart of Stone" and "Blood and Wine."

Unfortunately for fans of the game playing on the console, the GOTY edition will not allow the carrying over of the players save files from the original versions of the game. The news was discovered by Eurogamer on the GOTY edition's announcement on the official CD Projekt Red's forums, where community manager Marcin Momot confirmed the issue.

According to Momot, the save file problem is because each version of the game, meaning the GOTY and the regular one, are treated as separate products on the consoles. The development team can do nothing regarding the issue, as it seems like the problem lies in the respective console's market place and how it handles the games with regards to its existence on the machine.

While the news may not mean much to hardcore "Witcher" fans, who might already have the most up-to-date version of the game in addition to all of its downloadable content and expansions, it is unfortunate for those who might have passed on the standalone release of the expansion packs and waited for the GOTY version to play them. Meanwhile, players of the game on the PC platform will have no issues as clarified by Momot on Twitter.

Furthermore, the GOTY edition will also have a separate achievement list from the base game; meaning that both the achievements on the Xbox One and the Trophies list on the PlayStation 4. The actual effect of this news is still uncertain; as while it means that those hoping to use the GOTY version to continue earning achievement points or trophies for the game cannot do so, it also means that achievement and trophy hunters have another batch to add to their pool.

"The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year Edition" will release on August 30.
