An Unexpected Move

Olympic 400 meter runner Shaunae Miller from the Bahamas won the gold medal in a breathtaking head to head race against the American Allyson Felix.

Miller, twenty two years old, won by a hairline and in the most unexpected fashion. Miller literally dived for the finish line as Felix was about to step in and snatch the gold. Miller's plan worked and Felix was denied the win. Miller was ecstatic beyond words, while Felix was utterly dismayed.

Surprised Winner

Miller's gold medal finish was her personal best at 49.44 seconds, but after diving to the finish line she laid on the ground barely able to breathe unaware that she had won. She had to look up at the scoreboard to confirm who the winner was.

Reuters interviewed the gold medalist and she said, "I didn't see anyone until the last 20 meters and the only thing I was thinking was that I must get that gold medal."

She further added " I think (the dive) was just a reaction, my mind went blank, the next thing I knew I was lying on the ground. I've got a few cuts and bruises but I'm okay.

Heartbreaking Loss

Thirty year old silver medalist Felix who clocked in at 49.51 seconds felt utter disappointment. The win could have been her fifth Olympic gold medal. She told Reuters "I just gave it all I had, I don't think I had anything left to give. I feel emotionally and physically drained at this moment. I really wanted it, it's painful."

Despite  the heartbreaking loss, Felix holds her head high because she has already competed in four Olympic games and has won a total of seven Olympic medals making her the most decorated American female Olympic track and field athlete.

Comeback Victory

Miller lost against Felix in the 400 meters at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing. Miller learned her lesson and promised to overcome her rival in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

When the gunshot went off, Miller flew like a rocket and managed to get a good head start against Felix thanks to her long strides. However, Felix barreled her way through and came head to head with Miller. The two competitors were fiercely breathing against each other's neck all the way to the finish line when suddenly Miller made her unorthodox dive and won the gold medal.
