‘Aquaman’ Star Jason Momoa Eyes ‘The Crow’ Reboot Lead Role
It seems like Jason Momoa has plans of moving his superheroics from the waters of the DC Extended Universe' (DCEU) oceans and onto the neo-noir films of Detroit, with the "Aquaman" star reportedly circling the lead role of the planned reboot of the 1994 film "The Crow."
According to Mashable, the "Game of Thrones" star is reportedly in talks of playing the lead role in the long planned remake of the neo-noir fantasy superhero thriller. Corin Hardy is set to direct the reboot, taking over from Alex Proyas who directed the original film.
For those unfamiliar with the original film, "The Crow" was an adaptation of the comic book of the same name by James O'Barr released back in 1989. The film starred Brandon Lee, son of legendary Hong Kong martial arts film star Bruce Lee, in the role of Eric Draven.
The film told the story of Eric, a rock musician who was resurrected by the titular magical bird after he was murdered on October 30, Devil's Night right before their wedding was supposed to take place on Halloween. He and his fiancé were assaulted by a gang of vicious criminals, ending in Eric's murder and his fiancée being beaten and raped before eventually succumbing.
Upon his resurrection, Eric gained supernatural powers and set out to avenge his and his fiancée's deaths.
One of the more infamous facts about "The Crow" is that it was also Lee's final film as an accident occurred on set courtesy of a faulty prop pistol. Lee accidentally got shot and though he was rushed to the hospital, the actor still died not soon after.
Producers considered stopping production of the film and pulling it from release despite minimal work requiring for it to be finished, though "The Crow" eventually did end up getting its theatrical run and has gone on to be a cult classic.
Several sequels, both in the form of movies and television series, have since been spawned with a remake of the original film first surfacing in 2008. The script went transferred several hands, with Corin Hardy eventually signing on to helm the project. Though Hardy reportedly left the project earlier this year, this news suggests that he may have changed his mind.
As for Momoa, the actor's other budding projects consist of his casting as the king of the underwater city of Atlantis-turned-superhero in Warner Bros. planned series of film adaptations of DC Comics properties. Momoa will play Aquaman in the DCEU's future projects, including next year's "Justice League" and a future standalone "Aquaman" film, though he has already made a cameo appearance in the recent "Batma v Superman: Dawn of Justice."
As the film is still in the planning stages, there is no release date for "The Crow" reboot as of yet.
