‘High School DxD’ Season 4 Rumors Debunked: Here’s What Might Really Be Up For Another Anime Series
Rumors currently abound and continue to swirl regarding the possible next and fourth season to the highly perverted supernatural action harem series "High School DxD;" with many of them apparently so incredulous and unlikely that some have felt the need to institute some clarifications.
One such person who took to the Internet to clarify some possible misconceptions about "High School DxD" is Devil ~ King of Lucifer, a user of the Anime Amino website. Devil ~ King of Lucifer made a blog post to answer all of the rumors surrounding "High School DxD" season 4, and how it might relate or connect to the previous seasons in the series.
Among the rumors about the next season is that it will feature "High School DxD" Issei Hyoudou's kids from the future coming back and stirring things up in the past. While it is true that the idea has enough basis to warrant it, it turns out that any appearance of Issei's future offspring might not take place exactly how the rumors suggest.
To clarifiy; the existence of Issei's children are in the spinoff six-part special light novel "High School DxD EX," which was released with the Blu-Ray volumes of the anime series third season, "High School DxD BorN."
"High School DxD EX" was apparently written specifically to answer the chaos that "High School DxD BorN" brought to the anime adaptation's continuity. To recap, "BorN" ended up having a rushed pacing thanks to the producers trying to adapt three volumes worth of story from the light novel source materials instead of the usual two; causing the season to have a hodgepodge of problems by mixing things around, among other issues.
"EX" was therefore written to essentially retcon "BorN" into an alternate timeline, thanks to Issei's children's interfering with the events and making the events of the third anime season non-canon.
The other rumors with season 4 are those suggesting that Issei's friend and rival Genshirou Saji, another Sacred Gear user, will end up fighting and defeating Loki and that season 4 will actually arrive sometime this year.
For the Saji VS Loki rumor, the answer is simply that such a fight never actually happened in the source material. Meaning that unless the producers of the fourth season decides to deviate the adaptation even more, Saji defeating Loki alone in Issei's absence is just unlikely to happen.
For the anime's expected air date, which has been variously touted as possibly releasing in either supposedly early this year or by the end of the 2016 cycle, the explanation is more about economics. Compared to the much better received prior two seasons, the performance of third season in home media sales was much lower.
While "High School DxD" season 1 sold more than 10, 000 copies and season 2 selling for around 9000, "High School DxD BorN" only sold around 6000 copies. While the profits from those sales might be enough to produce another season, it is too low to begin production right now.
For comparison; the 10000+ copies of the first season allowed for the immediate production of season 2, which was aired immediately the following year. With the second seasons' lower profits, it took two years for "BorN" to arrive. If the math holds, then season 4 might not be seen until 2018 at the earliest.
