Mike Colter Strikes Back At The Chaos In Harlem In New ‘Luke Cage’ Trailer
Netflix recently released a new promotional video for the upcoming standalone "Luke Cage" series, focusing on the origins of the titular character played by Mike Colter, who will reprise the role after starring as the character in "Marvel's Jessica Jones."
Before he was a bar owner in New York, Luke Cage had its beginnings in the crime-ridden streets of Harlem and his origins will apparently be explored in his own upcoming series. According to the trailer, Luke's powers is the result of being experimented on in the past.
"I was put in some tank like an exotic fish. Came out with abilities," the character explained. Said abilities take the form of extreme durability, the most prominent of which is nigh indestructible skin that is resistant to bullets. Luke Cage has also been endowed with an advanced healing factor, allowing him to regenerate what wounds his enemies are able to inflict on him.
The series is expected to function as an origin story for the character; though it is not yet clear as to what extent it will focus on Cage's early beginnings, the trailer suggests that the series will feature his first forays into fighting against street and organized crime in Harlem.
Bits of the first half of the trailer showed Cage unwilling to actually get involved in all of the trouble happening around him, although some choice words from his friends and acquaintances, in addition to what looked like some life-changing and traumatic events, caused Cage to eventually change his tune and begin fighting against those who would prey on the weak in Harlem.
One such predator is Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes, one of the biggest gangsters in Harlem and owner of the local nightclub. Played by Mahershala Ali, Cottonmouth looks set to become on of the defining figures in the formation of Luke Cage's superhero identity.
Aside from allowing a sneak peek at the storyline of the series, the trailer also promises that Netflix's latest entry into the grittier side of the Marvel Cinematics Universe will continue the tone of previous titles. Just like "Daredevil" and "Jessica Jones," "Luke Cage" looks like it will have a ton of action and bullets flying around as the indestructible Power Man tries his best to fight against the Harlem underbelly at the street level.
Other than Colter and Ali, Luke Cage will also star Alfre Woodard, Simone MIssick, Theo Rossi, and Frank Whaley in main roles. Rosario Dawson was also featured prominently in the trailer, though she is only in the series as a guest star as Claire Temple.
Catch "Luke Cage" when the show releases Friday, September 30 on Netflix.
