Billy Bob Thornton reportedly being eyed to play as Steven Avery in Making a Murderer movie

"Making a Murderer" is such a big hit that its main subject, Steven Avery, has become a national rockstar. This is one reason why it is not surprising to see it get a sophomore run.

Mirror UK confirmed that "Making a Murderer" season 2 is coming and at the Stranger Than Fiction Panel in New York, series creator shed details on what people can expect from the case of Steven Avery.

"From our perspective, this story is obviously not over. It's real life and (Avery's and Brendan Dassey's) cases are both still pending," "Making a Murderer" co-creator Laura Ricciardi told Variety.

"We have no idea when the magistrate will make a decision in Brendan's case. We do know that two potential outcomes are that the judge could order Brendan's release or he could order a new trial. So we are on the edge of seats about that."

Ricciardi also said that more "significant developments" will be revealed in the second season.

Aside from "Making a Murderer" season 2, a movie adaptation is reportedly being eyed by Netflix. Among those on the radar to land the role of Steven Avery is veteran actor Billy Bob Thornton.

Reports of a "Making a Murderer" movie first surfaced last month and entertainment betting site Boyle Sports fired up rumors by saying there are already favorite actors for the lead role.

"It is clear the world has been gripped by the case of Teresa Halbach and Steven Avery and a motion picture seems likes the next port of call given the success of the Netflix series with Danny McBride and Billy Bob Thornton early favourites to play Steven," BoyleSports' Aoife Heffron said as per report by Mirror.

Steven Avery and "Making a Murderer" took the country by storm last December, creating a division between people when it comes to opinion judicial system, particularly in Wisconsin where the case happened.

Avery is a Manitowoc County, Wisconsin native who served 18 years in prison for a wrongful sexual assault conviction in 1995. He was exonerated through the efforts of Wisconsin Innocence Project in 2003 thanks to improved DNA testing that indicated another man committed the crime.

However, in 2007, he was again sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach.
