Netflix Releases Marvel's ‘Jessica Jones;' First Episode Not The Average Superhero Show!
Last Oct. 10, the first episode of "Jessica Jones" Marvel-Netflix TV adaptation was shown at the 2015 New York Comic Con. Gawker Media blog io9's first impression is that it delivered so much, looked so good, and is perfect for Netflix' binge-watching format.
Kristen Ritter, known for her appearance in "Breaking Bad" and short-lived sitcom "Don't Trust the B- in Apartment 23," stars as the titular Jessica Jones. Jones is a retired superhero with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, who takes odd jobs as a private eye in New York City. The heroine of the series was described as someone "taking jobs from law firms, distraught parents, and anyone who is willing to pay her fees," something you won't expect from a superhero, according to an article by Collider.
Poor superheroes are not unheard of; aside from the billionaires Bruce Wayne and Tony Stark, most of the movie/TV series superheroes today live modest lives. However, the "Jessica Jones" Marvel-Netflix heroine is different.
As Techinsider would put it, Jessica Jones is haunted by her past; just her backstory alone could fill up several episodes or even seasons of the series. But based on first episode, this series isn't about dwelling in the past. She is not a Bruce Wayne/Peter Parker type that's haunted by dead relatives. She is more in the now: paying bills, keeping her apartment, and drowning her sorrows with alcohol.
Jessica Jones may not live up to many people's superhero standards, but it is okay, she isn't trying. It is more of a Daredevil meets Gotham meets CSI approach: dark, gritty, and oftentimes disturbing, but fun through and through, according to the source cited above.
Aside from Ritter, there are also other notable casts appearing in the first season of "Jessica Jones." Carrie-Anne Moss plays Harper, a lawyer and businesswoman who will probably be a supporting character to the heroine. And as the trailers revealed, one of the main bad guys is David Tennant, the Tenth Doctor from "Doctor Who." He will play Kilgrave, an ominous character that knows a lot of Jessica Jones' past.
